Chapter 3: The Truth They Tried to Hide

By afternoon, the relatives had started whispering.
Daniel heard them from the hallway.
“She’s dramatic.”
“She trapped him with a baby.”
“He’ll regret choosing her over us.”
Amelia heard it too.
She stood near the nursery door, one hand on her belly, her face pale. Daniel found her there moments later.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I never wanted you to fight with your family.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You didn’t cause this.”
Then his mother appeared at the end of the hallway.
“She did,” she said coldly. “Ever since she entered this house, you changed.”
Daniel stared at her. “Good.”
His mother’s expression cracked.
“I raised you,” she snapped. “I gave up everything for you.”
“And I’m grateful,” Daniel said. “But gratitude is not permission to mistreat my wife.”
His mother’s eyes moved to Amelia.
“You are not good enough for him.”
Amelia’s lips parted, but Daniel stepped in front of her.
“That is the last time you speak to her that way.”
The hallway went silent.
His mother’s voice lowered. “You’ll regret this when she leaves you with nothing.”
Daniel gave a sad smile.
“She already gave me everything you never respected—peace, loyalty, and a family of my own.”
His mother turned away, humiliated.
That evening, Daniel helped pack their bags.
No shouting. No dramatic fight. Just quiet consequences.
At the door, his mother waited for him to change his mind.
He didn’t.
Before leaving, she looked at Amelia one final time.

But Amelia did not lower her eyes anymore.
She simply stood beside her husband, one hand in his, the other resting protectively over their unborn child.
