Chapter 2: The Line in the House

The next morning, Amelia woke to silence.
For months, mornings had meant cooking, cleaning, serving, smiling, apologizing. But today, the kitchen was spotless.
Daniel stood at the stove, making breakfast badly but seriously. Burnt toast sat beside scrambled eggs that looked more determined than edible.
Amelia blinked. “Daniel…”
“Sit down,” he said gently. “Please.”
She sat because her body was too tired to argue.
His mother entered wearing her robe, already frowning.
“Where’s my tea?”
Daniel didn’t turn around.
“In the cabinet.”
His mother froze. “What did you say?”
“I said the tea is in the cabinet.”
His aunt came in behind her. “Daniel, this is ridiculous.”
Daniel placed a plate in front of Amelia and looked at them calmly.
“From today on, Amelia does not cook for everyone. She does not clean up after everyone. She does not carry this house while carrying my child.”
His mother’s face hardened.
“So she has turned you against your own blood.”
Daniel set the spatula down.
“No. You did that.”
The words landed heavily.
Amelia’s eyes filled again, but this time she did not cry from pain. She cried because someone had finally said the truth out loud.
Daniel continued, “You are welcome to stay here only if you respect my wife. If you can’t, I’ll book a hotel for you today.”
His cousin laughed nervously. “You’d kick out your own family?”
Daniel looked at him.
“I’ll protect mine.”
His mother stood speechless.

For the first time in years, the power in the house shifted.
And Amelia, sitting at the table with swollen hands wrapped around a glass of water, finally felt the weight on her chest begin to lift.
