Chapter 17 - The Family Meeting

Three days after the wedding, Victoria summoned the family.

I learned about it from Denise.

Julian’s aunt called me directly.

“I think you should know what they’re saying.”

“What are they saying?”

“That you stole money.”

I almost laughed.

“What money?”

“The wedding gifts.”

“Those are still at Victoria’s house.”

“I know.”

“She says you took forty-five thousand dollars that belonged to Julian.”

“It was a cashier’s check payable to me.”

“I know that too.”

Denise sounded exhausted.

“She’s telling everyone you planned the marriage to collect gifts and disappear.”

Of course she was.

When people like Victoria lost control of the truth, they manufactured a replacement.

“What does Julian say?”

“That you had a nervous breakdown.”

I closed my eyes.

“Of course.”

“He says your attorney is manipulating you.”

“Also predictable.”

Denise hesitated.

“There’s a family meeting tonight.”

“I’m not coming.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“Good.”

“But I think someone should hear what they say.”

Rebecca later advised me not to attend.

So I didn’t.

Denise went.

Caleb went.

And with their knowledge, Caleb recorded the conversation because his state permitted one-party consent.

At 8:43, he sent us the file.

Victoria’s voice came first.

“Elena has always been unstable.”

Then Julian.

“She panicked when we discussed normal marital responsibilities.”

A cousin asked, “Did you try to access her bank account?”

Silence.

Julian answered.

“I was checking our finances.”

“Her account?”

“We’re married.”

Then Denise’s voice.

“What about the fake power of attorney?”

Victoria exploded.

“It was not fake.”

“Did Elena sign it?”

“She agreed to combine finances.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Julian interrupted.

“Aunt Denise, whose side are you on?”

“Truth’s.”

The room went quiet.

Then Victoria said something remarkable.

“We had a plan.”

My heart stopped.

She continued.

“Every successful family has a plan.”

“Elena knew Julian’s business needed capital.”

I whispered, “No, I didn’t.”

On the recording, Denise asked, “Did she know you intended to use her wedding check?”

Victoria responded.

“She would have once she settled down.”

Rebecca paused the audio.

“That’s useful.”

We continued.

Denise asked about my shares.

Julian became angry.

“She wasn’t using them.”

That sentence stunned me.

As though ownership required constant justification.

“She was sitting on nearly two million dollars while my company was drowning.”

Caleb’s voice appeared.

“So you married her to save your company?”

“No.”

Julian snapped.

Then silence.

Too much silence.

Finally, he said.

“I loved her.”

Victoria interrupted.

“And love means building together.”

Denise asked the simplest question of the night.

“Would Julian have married Elena if she had no money?”

No one answered.

Not Julian.

Not Victoria.

No one.

May you like

I stopped the recording.

I didn’t need the answer anymore.
