Chapter 16 - The Recordings

We did not plug the USB drive into Rebecca’s regular computer.
Her IT consultant created an isolated copy.
I sat across the room while the folders appeared on a monitor.
My name was one.
Samantha’s name was another.
Then the other women.
Rebecca clicked mine.
There were audio files labeled by date.
Some went back more than a year.
The first recording began inside a restaurant.
My own voice filled the room.
I remembered the night.
Julian and I had been dating for four months.
He had asked whether I worried about money.
I had laughed.
“My parents taught us to keep an emergency fund.”
Then Julian’s voice.
“How big?”
I heard myself tease him.
“Enough to run away from a bad man.”
The recording stopped.
No one spoke.
The irony was almost unbearable.
We opened another.
This one was from a weekend at my condo.
Julian casually asked what would happen to my shares if my father sold the company.
I explained that my shares were mine independently.
He changed the subject.
Another recording.
Julian asking about my grandfather.
Another.
Julian asking whether Mia received the same inheritance arrangements I did.
Another.
Victoria asking whether my parents planned to buy us a house.
They had been gathering information in my own voice.
Using intimacy as surveillance.
I felt violated in a way I struggled to describe.
Then Rebecca opened a spreadsheet.
It contained columns.
Asset.
Estimated value.
Access difficulty.
Legal barrier.
Timing.
My name appeared across the top.
The $45,000 gift was marked EASY.
My brokerage account was MEDIUM.
My company shares were HARD - father interference.
The supposed trust was marked UNKNOWN - highest priority.
At the bottom was an estimated target.
Potential household benefit after marriage: $3.2M-$6M.
I stared until the numbers blurred.
Julian hadn’t just hoped marriage would improve his finances.
He had modeled it.
“What happens now?”
I asked.
Rebecca closed the folder.
“Now we give a forensic copy to law enforcement.”
Caleb shifted in his chair.
“Am I in trouble?”
“You may be asked how you obtained it.”
“I took it from my mother’s office.”
“That matters.”
His face fell.
“But the evidence also matters.”
“I’ll tell the truth.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s all you can do.”
My father had remained silent during most of the review.
Now he looked at Caleb.
“Why are you helping Elena?”
Caleb rubbed his bruised jaw.
“Because I spent years telling myself Julian was just ambitious.”
He looked at me.
“Yesterday I watched him become exactly the person he always was.”
My father nodded slowly.
Then the forensic consultant called us back to the screen.
“There’s a deleted folder.”
Rebecca stood.
“Can you recover it?”
“Already did.”
A new directory opened.
Its name was simple.
AFTER WEDDING.
Inside were four documents.
A household agreement.
A loan application.
A blank asset-transfer authorization.
And a typed letter supposedly written by me.
Rebecca opened the letter.
My blood turned cold.
It stated that I had voluntarily decided to distance myself from my parents because they interfered with my marriage.
At the bottom was a blank space for my signature.

They hadn’t just planned to take control of my money.
They had planned to make sure the people most likely to protect me were pushed out of my life first.
