Chapter 2 - The Camera Never Blinked

The enormous screen behind the wedding band flickered to life.

Usually, it displayed childhood photographs of the bride and groom.

Now it showed the ballroom from above.

The timestamp read 8:17 p.m.

Malcolm stood beside the sound technician.

“Rewind thirty minutes.”

Guests shifted nervously.

Nobody was leaving now.

Not because the doors were locked.

Because everyone wanted to see what happened next.

The footage showed Chloe laughing beside the cake table.

Her ring was clearly visible.

At 7:52, she removed it.

Not accidentally.

Deliberately.

She slipped it from her finger while talking to Amanda.

A murmur swept through the room.

Chloe's face drained of color.

“Stop that.”

Malcolm ignored her.

On the screen, Chloe glanced around.

Then she handed the ring to Amanda.

The ballroom erupted.

Eleanor whispered something I couldn't hear.

Dominic closed his eyes.

I watched the video without moving.

Amanda tucked the ring into her silver purse.

Then Chloe leaned close and said something.

There was no audio from that angle.

But their expressions told enough.

They were smiling.

Ten minutes later, Amanda walked toward the champagne fountain.

Toward me.

She reached into her purse.

Then she hesitated.

Her hand stopped inches from my open handbag.

Someone passed behind her.

Amanda quickly walked away.

My stomach tightened.

They had planned to plant it on me.

Chloe suddenly shouted.

“This proves nothing.”

Malcolm looked at her.

“It proves you knowingly made a false accusation after voluntarily giving the ring to another person.”

Amanda burst into tears.

“I didn't want to do it.”

Chloe spun around.

“Shut up.”

That was her mistake.

Amanda's fear disappeared beneath something stronger.

Anger.

“You said it would only scare her.”

Dominic's head snapped toward his cousin.

I looked at him.

Amanda pointed at Chloe.

“You said Dominic wanted Vivienne humiliated enough to leave.”

The entire ballroom turned toward my husband.

He went white.

“That's a lie.”

Amanda laughed bitterly.

“Is it?”

She opened her purse.

A diamond flashed beneath the chandelier light.

The missing ring.

A guest near the front gasped.

Amanda placed it on the nearest table.

“I was supposed to put it in Vivienne's purse.”

Chloe lunged toward her.

Security stepped between them.

I looked at Dominic.

Three years of marriage.

A baby due in six weeks.

And apparently my humiliation had been discussed like a seating arrangement.

“Did you know?”

My voice was quiet.

Dominic looked around at the two hundred people waiting for his answer.

“Vivienne, this isn't the place.”

I almost smiled.

He had always loved that sentence.

Not the right time.

Not the right place.

Not in front of family.

Not tonight.

Always another excuse.

“This is exactly the place.”

He swallowed.

And before he could answer, Amanda said the words that destroyed whatever remained between us.

May you like

“He knew.”
