Chapter 13 - The Father Who Never Drowned

Richard Caldwell looked nothing like the photographs in Eleanor's house.

Those pictures showed a confident businessman in tailored suits.

The man sitting in Dad's attorney's office wore faded jeans and carried fifteen years of fear in his face.

Dominic entered alone first.

I remained behind the observation glass with Dad and Rebecca.

Richard stood.

“Son.”

Dominic stopped six feet away.

“You're alive.”

Richard's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“My mother told me you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe that.”

Richard lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Dominic's voice cracked.

“Why?”

The answer was not noble.

Richard had stolen money.

When partners discovered it, he panicked.

Eleanor helped him disappear.

They staged the boating accident.

She collected insurance and protected their remaining assets.

Their marriage ended privately afterward.

Richard spent years moving between countries.

Eventually, Eleanor cut him off.

But she kept using businesses originally created under his schemes.

Then Whitaker Holdings appeared again.

Richard looked toward the glass.

“Your mother became obsessed with that family.”

Dad entered the room.

Richard visibly stiffened.

“You remember me.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to steal from my company twenty years ago.”

Richard swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And now your former wife targeted my daughter.”

“I didn't know.”

Dad did not raise his voice.

“That answer seems popular in your family.”

Richard looked ashamed.

Then he gave investigators something important.

An old encrypted drive containing original business records.

Those records proved Eleanor had controlled several shell companies.

They also showed recent payments to Gerald Pike.

And one payment to a private investigator.

The investigator had followed me for nine months.

My photographs filled a folder.

Leaving prenatal appointments.

Shopping.

Meeting friends.

Visiting my parents.

Dominic stared at them.

“She watched Vivienne for nine months?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed to the account.

“That isn't Eleanor's company.”

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Whose is it?”

Richard looked directly at Dominic.

“Chloe's father.”

The groom's new father-in-law.

A man who had barely spoken at the wedding.

A man everyone had assumed was embarrassed by Chloe's behavior.

Robert Mercer had not been embarrassed.

He had been involved from the beginning.

And unlike Chloe, he had never been caught on camera.
