Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO NEEDED HIM BROKEN

Dominic recovered quickly.

Men like Dominic survived by recovering quickly.

His face hardened.

His body shifted behind Elena.

Adrian Vale looked far less controlled.

Sweat darkened the collar of his shirt.

His hand shook.

Elena remained still.

Her eyes found Luca.

Then Maya behind him.

Relief crossed her face.

“Maya.”

“Mom.”

Maya tried to move forward.

Anthony stopped her.

Dominic glanced at the child.

“You should’ve kept running.”

Luca’s expression changed.

“Look at me.”

Dominic did.

“Not her.”

Dominic smiled faintly.

“There he is.”

“What?”

“The Luca I remember.”

Luca wheeled forward two feet.

Anthony touched his shoulder.

Luca stopped.

“You remember the man you put in a chair.”

Dominic shook his head.

“No.”

“No?”

“I remember the man who was going to destroy everything.”

Luca stared at him.

“So you poisoned me.”

Vale flinched.

Dominic noticed.

His eyes moved sideways.

It was enough.

Luca saw it.

“So that’s true.”

Vale swallowed.

“Luca—”

“Be quiet.”

Vale obeyed.

Dominic laughed.

“You still think this was personal.”

“It became personal when you stole twelve years.”

“I saved your life.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“From what?”

“From yourself.”

The answer made Luca angrier than denial.

Dominic continued.

“You were going to tear apart the organization.”

“I was going legitimate.”

“You were handing territory to enemies.”

“I was closing illegal operations.”

“You were weakening us.”

“I was trying to stop burying people.”

Dominic’s face sharpened.

“We built power.”

“We built fear.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

For the first time, Luca understood that the difference between them had always existed.

He had simply refused to see it.

Dominic looked toward Maya.

“You found religion because a kid wandered through a hedge?”

Luca’s voice dropped.

“No.”

“I found out I’d spent twelve years trusting a coward.”

Dominic’s face changed.

Elena moved slightly.

Vale tightened his grip.

Luca saw it.

“Adrian.”

Vale looked at him.

“Let her go.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

Dominic spoke.

“He knows what happens if he does.”

Luca looked between them.

“You’re afraid of him.”

Vale said nothing.

Dominic laughed.

“Everybody is.”

Luca tilted his head.

“I’m not.”

“You should be.”

“No.”

Luca looked at Elena.

“Neither is she.”

Elena suddenly drove her heel backward.

Vale shouted.

His grip loosened.

Anthony’s men moved.

Dominic grabbed Elena.

A guard tackled Vale.

Elena twisted free.

For three chaotic seconds, the hallway erupted.

Luca remained where he was.

Dominic reached inside his coat.

Anthony raised his weapon.

“Don’t.”

Dominic stopped.

His hand remained near the coat.

Luca’s voice was quiet.

“Take your hand out slowly.”

Dominic stared at him.

“You won’t let him fire.”

“Try me.”

Dominic studied Luca’s face.

Then slowly removed his hand.

Empty.

Anthony advanced.

Dominic backed toward an open doorway.

“You think you won.”

Luca did not answer.

“You think standing for five seconds gives your life back?”

Still nothing.

Dominic’s smile returned.

“You have no idea what happens next.”

He stepped backward.

The floor beneath him gave way.

An old maintenance panel collapsed.

Dominic vanished.

A crash sounded below.

Anthony rushed to the opening.

“He fell one level.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Get him.”

By the time security reached the lower floor, Dominic was gone.

A service tunnel ran beneath the hospital.

He had known it.

Of course he had.

Vale was not so lucky.

He sat against the wall with his wrists secured.

Elena crossed the hallway and grabbed Maya.

She held her so tightly the child squeaked.

“I can’t breathe.”

Elena immediately loosened her arms.

Maya buried her face against her.

Luca watched.

Then Elena looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For bringing this to your house.”

“You brought Maya.”

Elena stared at him.

“That may be the only good thing anyone has brought into that house in years.”

Maya looked over.

“Told you he was nice.”

Elena laughed once through tears.

Luca looked at Vale.

The doctor stared at the floor.

“Bring him downstairs.”

They moved Vale into an old consultation room.

Luca sat opposite him.

Keene stood near the door.

Anthony remained behind Vale.

Elena and Maya waited elsewhere.

Vale looked exhausted.

Luca spoke first.

“What did you give me?”

Vale shook his head.

“I need legal counsel.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“This is not court.”

“That’s exactly why I need counsel.”

Luca leaned forward.

“Then I’ll tell you what I know.”

Vale said nothing.

“Your scans were falsified.”

No reaction.

“Thomas Bell’s imaging replaced mine.”

Vale’s eyes flickered.

“Daniel Harper found the payments.”

A stronger reaction.

“My father knew part of it.”

Vale closed his eyes.

“And Dominic just left you behind.”

That one landed.

Vale opened his eyes.

“He’ll come back.”

“No.”

Luca’s voice was almost sympathetic.

“He won’t.”

“You don’t know him.”

“I know him better than you.”

Vale looked away.

“Dominic keeps useful people.”

Luca continued.

“You just became evidence.”

Vale’s breathing changed.

Keene watched him clinically.

Luca spoke gently.

“What did you give me?”

Vale’s jaw tightened.

Luca waited.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

Finally, Vale whispered.

“It wasn’t one drug.”

Luca felt something turn inside his chest.

“What was it?”

“A protocol.”

“Describe it.”

Vale looked at Keene.

She spoke.

“No dosages.”

Luca glanced at her.

She continued.

“We don’t need operational details.”

Vale nodded weakly.

“Initially, sedation.”

“To make me forget?”

“To prevent resistance.”

Luca’s hands tightened.

“Then?”

“A neuromuscular suppressant.”

“For twelve years?”

“No.”

Vale looked ashamed.

“The early months were supposed to be enough.”

“Enough for what?”

“To keep you weak.”

“So I would abandon restructuring.”

Vale nodded.

Luca’s stomach turned.

“What changed?”

“You didn’t abandon it.”

“I was in rehabilitation.”

“You kept asking attorneys to continue.”

Luca remembered.

Even from the hospital, he had demanded meetings.

Dominic had told him stress could kill him.

Vale continued.

“Dominic became afraid recovery would restore your independence.”

“So he extended it.”

“Yes.”

“For twelve years.”

Vale looked at the floor.

“It evolved.”

Keene stepped forward.

“What does that mean medically?”

“Long-term inactivity caused severe deconditioning.”

“Obviously.”

“We layered medications that reduced spasms and motor output.”

“Why?”

“To make examinations appear consistent.”

Keene’s face hardened.

“You manufactured weakness.”

“Yes.”

“You suppressed observable signs.”

“Yes.”

“You altered records.”

“Yes.”

Luca said nothing.

Every answer was a theft.

Vale looked at him.

“Not every doctor knew.”

“How many?”

“Most saw what we gave them.”

“Fake scans.”

“Yes.”

“Fake history.”

“Yes.”

“Fake test summaries.”

“Yes.”

Luca leaned back.

“How much of my paralysis is real now?”

Vale looked at Keene.

“I don’t know.”

“You treated me for eleven years.”

“I don’t know what permanent damage came from the original event.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“Original event.”

Vale stopped speaking.

Keene caught it too.

“What original event?”

Vale looked toward the door.

Luca’s voice sharpened.

“Adrian.”

Vale closed his eyes.

“You didn’t have a stroke.”

Silence.

Luca felt the room tilt.

“What?”

“You never had a vascular event.”

Keene stepped closer.

“Then what happened?”

Vale’s face went gray.

“Dominic arranged the first episode.”

Luca stared at him.

“How?”

Vale shook his head.

“I’m not giving details.”

“Fine.”

Luca’s voice was cold.

“Tell me why.”

Vale looked at him.

“You were never naturally paralyzed.”

The sentence seemed impossible even after everything else.

Luca heard his father’s voice.

Trust no one who tells you your body failed you.

Vale continued.

“You collapsed because you were drugged.”

Luca’s breath stopped.

“The hospital symptoms were induced.”

Keene’s face hardened.

“And the weakness?”

“Induced.”

“The imaging?”

“Substituted.”

“The diagnosis?”

“Fabricated.”

Luca looked down at his legs.

For twelve years, he had believed a part of him had died.

Now he was being told it had been buried alive.

A rage unlike anything he had ever known rose inside him.

Not explosive.

Worse.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Vale saw it.

“I wanted to stop.”

“When?”

Vale did not answer.

“When?”

“Year three.”

Luca laughed.

It sounded terrible.

“Year three.”

“I told Dominic it was becoming dangerous.”

“And?”

“He threatened my family.”

“So you continued.”

Vale’s voice cracked.

“Yes.”

“Year four?”

“Yes.”

“Year five?”

“Yes.”

“Six?”

“Yes.”

Luca looked at him.

“Daniel Harper found you in year six.”

Vale lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“You offered him money.”

“Yes.”

“He refused.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Vale began shaking.

“I wasn’t there.”

“Who ordered it?”

“I don’t know.”

Luca stared.

Vale whispered.

“Dominic handled problems.”

Elena stood in the doorway.

Nobody had heard her enter.

Her face had become completely still.

“Problems.”

Vale looked up.

Elena walked into the room.

“My husband was a problem?”

“No.”

“You just said—”

“I didn’t mean—”

“My daughter grew up without her father because your friend called him a problem?”

Vale’s eyes filled with panic.

“Elena.”

She slapped him.

Once.

Hard.

Anthony moved forward.

Luca lifted a hand.

Elena’s breathing shook.

She did not hit Vale again.

Instead, she looked at Luca.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“For six years.”

“Yes.”

“He could have told someone.”

“Yes.”

Vale whispered.

“I was afraid.”

Elena turned.

“So was Daniel.”

Her voice broke.

“He told the truth anyway.”

Vale had no answer.

Anthony’s phone rang.

He stepped away.

Then his expression changed.

He looked at Luca.

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Dominic released something.”

“Released what?”

Anthony turned the phone.

Every major Chicago news outlet had received documents.

Medical documents.

Videos.

Photographs.

The headline was already spreading.

CRIME BOSS LUCA COSTELLO FAKED DISABILITY FOR TWELVE YEARS TO AVOID FEDERAL SCRUTINY.

Luca stared at the screen.

Dominic had moved faster than expected.

The story included photographs of Luca’s recent tests.

Footage of him attempting to stand.

Old financial records.

Edited medical documents.

A narrative perfectly designed to turn the truth upside down.

Luca had not been secretly poisoned.

According to Dominic’s leak, Luca had secretly pretended to be paralyzed.

Maya appeared beside Elena.

She read the headline slowly.

Then looked at Luca.

“They’re saying you lied.”

“Yes.”

“But they’re lying.”

“Yes.”

“Can’t you just tell everybody?”

Luca looked at the screens.

He had spent decades learning that truth alone rarely won.

Proof won.

Timing won.

Who spoke first mattered.

Dominic had spoken first.

Anthony received another message.

His face tightened further.

“What now?”

“The federal prosecutor’s office wants to interview you.”

Luca smiled without humor.

“Of course they do.”

“And there’s something else.”

Anthony showed him another headline.

It included a photograph from twelve years earlier.

Luca in the hospital.

Dominic beside him.

And Salvatore Costello signing documents.

The caption claimed Luca’s father had helped stage the disability.

Dominic was not merely trying to escape.

He was rewriting the entire story before Luca could expose him.

Luca looked at Vale.

“You’re going to testify.”

Vale went pale.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Dominic will kill me.”

Luca leaned closer.

“He already tried.”

Vale stared at him.

Then Luca heard Maya gasp.

Everyone turned.

She was looking at the television.

A reporter stood outside Luca’s estate.

Behind her, police vehicles approached the gates.

The reporter spoke rapidly.

A warrant had been issued.

Not for Luca.

For Elena Harper.

Suspicion of financial fraud.

The alleged victim was North Harbor Logistics.

The person who had filed the complaint six years earlier was listed as Daniel Harper.

Elena stared.

“My husband never filed that.”

Luca understood immediately.

Dominic had prepared this years ago.

A false case waiting in storage.

A dead husband’s signature.

A widow framed by the man she had been trying to expose.

Elena whispered.

“He planned for this.”

Luca looked at the gate cameras.

Police vehicles stopped outside.

“No.”

His voice turned cold.

“He planned for me to stay helpless.”

Luca placed both hands on the wheelchair.

Then looked at Keene.

“Tomorrow morning.”

“What?”

“I start walking.”

She stared at him.

“You start rehabilitation.”

“No.”

Luca’s eyes stayed on the news.

“I start walking.”

“Those are not the same thing.”

“They are now.”

Because Dominic had taken Luca’s legs.

He had taken his reputation.

He had taken Daniel Harper’s life.

He had taken Maya’s father.

And now he was trying to take Elena too.

Luca had spent twelve years sitting inside a lie.

May you like

He was done sitting.
