Chapter 13 - THE FIELD WHERE IT STARTED

The baseball field had not changed much.

Rust had reached the lower fence.

The bleachers leaned slightly.

The scoreboard no longer worked.

Luca remembered being sixteen there.

Dominic had pitched.

Luca had hit.

Matteo had chased balls near the fence.

Salvatore watched from the third row.

A family before power finished teaching them what they were willing to do for it.

Now Luca returned in an armored vehicle.

Vale sat in another vehicle under federal protection.

Agents surrounded the neighborhood.

Dominic had demanded Vale.

Nobody intended to give him Vale.

The plan was controlled.

The plan lasted six minutes.

Then Harlan appeared at home plate with an explosive-looking vest.

Agents stopped.

Dominic’s voice came through a stadium speaker.

“No snipers.”

Luca stared at Harlan.

Keene, beside him, whispered.

“Could be fake.”

“Could be real.”

Nobody moved.

Dominic continued.

“Luca comes alone.”

Anthony shook his head.

“No.”

Luca ignored him.

“Chair.”

Anthony looked at him.

“No.”

“Chair.”

“Absolutely not.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“Everyone has become very comfortable telling me no.”

Anthony leaned closer.

“He has Harlan wired.”

“He wants me.”

“Exactly.”

Luca transferred into his wheelchair.

Keene gripped the handle.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“You cannot navigate that grass alone.”

“Watch me.”

She stared at him.

Then let go.

Luca rolled toward the field.

Each rotation felt absurdly loud.

Home plate waited.

Harlan trembled.

Dominic stepped from the dugout.

He looked tired.

Older.

No black ring.

Luca noticed immediately.

“Lose something?”

Dominic looked at his bare hand.

“Sentimental objects become liabilities.”

“You taught me that.”

“Yes.”

They stared.

Dominic looked behind Luca.

“Vale?”

“Safe.”

“Then Harlan dies.”

Harlan gasped.

Dominic did not look at him.

Luca stopped twenty feet away.

“You don’t want Harlan dead.”

“No?”

“No.”

“He knows where the money went.”

Dominic smiled.

“You have improved.”

“I had time.”

“Twelve years.”

“Yes.”

The smile faded.

Luca looked at the vest.

“Fake.”

Harlan stared.

Dominic’s face remained blank.

Luca continued.

“You never liked explosives.”

Dominic laughed softly.

“You remember.”

“You said they were messy.”

“Still are.”

Luca looked at Harlan.

“Take it off.”

Harlan shook his head violently.

Dominic said nothing.

Luca stared at him.

“Take it off.”

Harlan fumbled with straps.

Dominic let him.

The vest fell.

Wires.

Blocks.

No detonator.

Fake.

Agents moved at the perimeter.

Dominic raised one hand.

“Careful.”

He held Salvatore’s will in the other.

Luca stopped them with a gesture.

“What do you want?”

Dominic looked around the field.

“Do you remember your first home run?”

“No.”

“I do.”

“Of course.”

“You never remembered the things other people remembered about you.”

Luca watched him.

“This is nostalgia?”

“No.”

“It’s explanation.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“I loved you.”

Luca’s expression did not move.

“As a brother.”

“You poisoned me.”

“Because you were becoming someone I couldn’t follow.”

“That isn’t love.”

“It was the only kind I knew.”

Luca almost felt pity.

Almost.

Dominic continued.

“You wanted clean companies.”

“You wanted audits.”

“You wanted to dismantle everything Salvatore built.”

“Yes.”

“You would have gotten us all killed.”

“Maybe.”

“You would have destroyed Matteo.”

“He destroyed himself.”

“You humiliated him.”

“How?”

“By existing.”

Luca exhaled.

“There it is.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“The excuse.”

“You needed me cruel so you could justify being worse.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

Luca continued.

“You needed me arrogant.”

“You needed Matteo weak.”

“You needed my father afraid.”

“You needed Vale desperate.”

“You needed everyone to be something that made your choices inevitable.”

Dominic stared.

“And now?”

“Now you ran out of people to blame.”

Harlan looked between them.

Dominic smiled without humor.

“You still think morality saved you?”

“No.”

“What saved you?”

Luca thought of an eight-year-old girl with a broken shoe.

“Someone looked closely.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“The girl.”

“Yes.”

“I should have removed her the first day.”

Luca’s eyes changed.

“Say that again.”

Dominic smiled.

“There he is.”

The old anger.

The old violence.

Dominic wanted it.

He wanted Luca to become predictable again.

Luca saw the trap.

And stepped away from it.

“No.”

Dominic frowned.

“I won’t give you that.”

“What?”

“The man you remember.”

For the first time, Dominic looked uncertain.

Luca gripped the wheelchair arms.

Then locked the wheels.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

Luca placed both feet on the ground.

Far behind him, Keene whispered something angry.

Luca pushed upward.

His legs shook.

His arms helped.

He stood.

Dominic stared.

Harlan stared.

Federal cameras recorded.

Luca released one hand from the chair.

Then the other.

For two seconds, he stood unsupported.

Dominic’s face emptied.

Luca smiled.

“This is what you were afraid of?”

Dominic stepped backward.

Luca held.

Three seconds.

Four.

Then grabbed the chair.

“You did all this for a man who could stand.”

Dominic’s composure broke.

“You couldn’t.”

“I just did.”

“You were supposed to stay weak.”

The words were recorded.

Luca looked at the agents.

Dominic realized.

His face changed.

Then he laughed.

“You think that proves anything?”

“No.”

Luca lowered himself into the chair.

“Vale does.”

A stadium gate opened.

Adrian Vale entered under guard.

Dominic stared.

Vale stopped ten yards away.

For twelve years, Vale had feared Dominic.

Today, he looked at Luca first.

Then Dominic.

Vale spoke.

“He ordered it.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

Vale continued.

“He ordered the original drugging.”

“He ordered the false scans.”

“He approved continued suppression.”

“He threatened me.”

“He threatened Salvatore.”

“He ordered Daniel Harper silenced.”

Dominic laughed.

“Liar.”

Vale flinched.

Then kept going.

“And he paid Congressman Harlan.”

Harlan shouted.

“He did.”

Everyone looked.

Harlan’s fear had turned.

Dominic stared at him.

Harlan pointed.

“He paid through Matteo.”

“You knew.”

Dominic’s voice was low.

Harlan answered.

“I knew about the records.”

“Not the poisoning.”

Dominic shook his head.

“Cowards.”

Luca almost laughed.

Three men who had betrayed one another now argued over which betrayal was cleaner.

Dominic looked at Luca.

“You win?”

“No.”

Luca’s answer surprised him.

“No?”

“Daniel is still dead.”

“My father is still dead.”

“I lost twelve years.”

“Elena lost her husband.”

“Maya lost her father.”

“There is no winning.”

Dominic stared.

“Then what is this?”

“Ending it.”

Agents moved.

Dominic pulled a small device.

Everyone froze.

Anthony shouted.

Dominic smiled.

“This one isn’t fake.”

He pressed a button.

Nothing happened.

Dominic stared.

Pressed again.

Nothing.

Tommy’s voice came from the bleachers.

“You mean this?”

Everyone looked.

Tommy stood behind an agent holding a battery.

Luca’s eyes widened.

“Tommy.”

The boy shrugged.

“Experience.”

Anthony looked furious.

“How did he get here?”

Tommy pointed at his grandmother.

“She drives.”

Dominic stared at the dead device.

Agents rushed him.

He fought.

Hard.

But thirty years of control ended in eight seconds.

Dominic hit the dirt beside home plate.

His hands were cuffed behind him.

He turned his head toward Luca.

“You’ll always need someone to push that chair.”

Luca looked down at him.

“Not for long.”

Dominic laughed.

“You think walking fixes you?”

“No.”

Luca leaned forward.

“But it proves you didn’t.”

Dominic stopped laughing.

Federal agents took him away.

Harlan followed.

Vale followed.

The will was recovered.

The field emptied slowly.

Keene walked toward Luca.

She looked furious.

“You stood unsupported.”

“Yes.”

“You could have fallen.”

“Yes.”

“You did it on grass.”

“Yes.”

“You are the worst patient I have ever treated.”

Luca smiled.

“Thank you.”

She stared.

Then hugged him.

It shocked both of them.

She stepped back immediately.

“Never mention that.”

“Agreed.”

Maya ran onto the field.

Elena followed.

Maya stopped in front of Luca.

“You stood.”

“Yes.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

“No.”

“Did Dr. Keene yell?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Luca laughed.

Then Maya looked toward home plate.

“Is it over?”

Luca wanted to say yes.

He almost did.

Then Anthony’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

Luca noticed.

“What?”

Anthony looked toward the agents leaving with Dominic.

“Matteo escaped transport.”

Luca stared.

“How?”

“Vehicle collision.”

“Where?”

“Two miles from the federal building.”

“Anyone hurt?”

“One marshal.”

“Matteo?”

“Gone.”

Maya’s smile disappeared.

The conspiracy had lost Dominic.

But the brother who killed Daniel Harper was free.

And unlike Dominic, Matteo no longer had money, trust, protection, or a future.
