Chapter 18 - THE COST OF TRUTH

The federal hearings lasted five months.
Luca testified publicly.
He named companies, politicians, contractors, and former captains.
News channels called him a crime leader, a victim, a witness, and a traitor.
Sometimes all four descriptions appeared in the same broadcast.
The government seized several properties.
The Costello shipping division entered independent supervision.
Luca retained only legitimate businesses that could be separated from the criminal network.
He did not complain.
Every loss felt smaller than the twelve years stolen from his body.
Bianca pleaded guilty to conspiracy, unlawful medical experimentation, obstruction, and concealing Samuel’s death.
At sentencing, she asked to address Luca.
He attended with Elena and Tommy.
Maya remained outside with Mariah.
“I loved you,” Bianca said.
Luca looked at her through the courtroom glass.
“Love without courage became another weapon.”
Bianca lowered her head.
“I know.”
Salvatore’s trial lasted longer.
He blamed Vittorio.
He blamed Bianca.
He blamed Luca’s reforms.
He insisted the paralysis had prevented a citywide war.
The jury found him guilty.
Before sentencing, he turned toward Luca.
“You think standing makes you free?”
“No,” Luca said.
“Truth does.”
Salvatore received life in prison.
Adrian’s medical network was exposed.
Several physicians lost their licenses.
Families of other patients requested investigations after learning the compound had been tested on more than one person.
Luca was not the only victim.
He was merely the one who survived long enough to discover it.
Elena attended every important hearing.
She did not present herself as Luca’s partner.
Not yet.
She was Maya’s mother and a witness to the consequences.
After the final hearing, Luca asked her to walk with him through the courthouse garden.
He used two canes.
Each step required concentration.
“Are you asking me to wait while you become the man you were?” she asked.
“No.”
“That man did not know how easily power could hide truth.”
“Who are you becoming?”
“I don’t know.”
Luca stopped beside a fountain.
“But I want to become someone Maya can know without needing protection from my secrets.”
Elena touched his hand.
“That is the first answer you have given me that sounds like a beginning.”
She kissed him gently.
Not as forgiveness.
May you like
Not as a promise.
As permission for one honest moment.
