Chapter 13 - WHAT BIANCA CONFESSED
Salvatore was taken into federal custody.
Aunt Grace returned home with Tommy.
She held him so tightly that he complained he could not breathe.
He did not ask her to let go.
Bianca requested to speak with Luca before surrendering.
She refused an attorney.
She sat in the estate study while Marisol recorded her confession.
Vittorio had commissioned the compound.
He believed Luca’s proposed reforms would weaken the family.
His plan was to cause temporary symptoms, remove Luca from negotiations, and reverse the effects after the dock agreement expired.
Bianca arranged the laboratory.
Adrian developed the formula.
Salvatore handled delivery.
Then Vittorio died unexpectedly.
Salvatore convinced Bianca that stopping the treatment immediately could kill Luca.
That was a lie.
Within six months, Bianca realized the paralysis was being maintained deliberately.
She threatened to expose Salvatore.
He showed her evidence connecting her to the original project and Samuel’s disappearance.
Bianca remained silent.
“What happened to Samuel?” Tommy asked.
Marisol had allowed him to listen from the doorway.
Bianca looked at him.
“Samuel photographed the laboratory.”
“He demanded we stop the injections.”
“He said he would take the evidence to Luca.”
“Salvatore ordered Victor Lane to frighten him.”
“What does that mean?” Tommy asked.
Bianca’s voice lowered.
“Victor struck him during an argument.”
“Samuel fell and hit his head.”
“He died before a doctor arrived.”
Tommy did not move.
“Where is he?”
Bianca gave Marisol the location of an unmarked grave near an abandoned Costello warehouse.
She also confessed that she had created the payments for Tommy.
Salvatore diverted them.
“I told myself you were being cared for,” she said.
“I did not verify it because the truth would have required me to act.”
Tommy’s eyes were dry.
“You’re all the same.”
Bianca accepted the judgment.
“No.”
“Some of us did worse things than others.”
“But all of us chose silence.”
Luca looked at the woman who had raised him.
“Why did you warn us about Salvatore?”
“Because I saw Maya.”
“What changed?”
“She looked at you without fear.”
Bianca glanced toward the garden.
“I realized she might grow up surrounded by the same secrets that raised us.”
“I could not save your childhood.”
“I could still refuse to destroy hers.”
Bianca was arrested.
As officers led her away, Luca did not forgive her.
He also did not look away.
Honesty had come at a cost.
