Chapter 4 — The Truth Walks Into the Boardroom

The emergency board meeting began exactly at four o'clock.
Every executive looked tense.
Jasper entered confidently despite the chaos.
"This is all temporary."
"We'll recover."
No one agreed.
Instead...
The chairman quietly placed a folder in front of him.
"You should read page one."
Jasper opened it.
His face turned white.
Every original investment agreement contained a confidential appendix.
One sentence appeared on every document.
Investment contingent upon continued strategic relationship with the Robertson family.
He stared at the page.
"No..."
"This can't be real."
The conference room doors opened.
Everyone stood.
Finnley Robertson entered first.
Behind him walked Hailey.
She wore a simple cream-colored dress.
Her son rested peacefully in her arms.
She looked tired.
But she looked stronger than Jasper had ever seen her.
The chairman smiled respectfully.
"Ms. Robertson."
"We appreciate you coming."
Jasper looked from Hailey to Finnley.
His voice cracked.
"You..."
"You're Robertson?"
Hailey met his eyes calmly.
"I always was."
"You just never cared enough to ask."
His knees nearly gave out.
Finnley spoke with quiet authority.
"My daughter never asked me to interfere in your marriage."
"But she also never asked me to continue protecting your business."
He nodded toward the board.
"As of this morning..."
"Robertson Global has formally withdrawn every guarantee associated with your company."
The chairman added one final sentence.
"The board has unanimously voted to remove you as CEO."
The room fell silent.
