Chapter 2 — The Woman Jasper Never Really Knew

The bus hadn't traveled another three blocks before three black SUVs appeared behind it.
Their windows were dark.
Their movements were synchronized.
When the bus pulled over at the next stop, four men in tailored suits stepped out.
One approached the driver politely.
"Excuse me, sir."
"We're here for Mrs. Hailey Robertson."
Every passenger turned to stare.
Hailey blinked.
She hadn't seen those men since the day she insisted on living an ordinary life.
The lead guard smiled gently.
"Your father asked us to bring you home."
The bus driver immediately stood.
"I'll lower the ramp again."
"No rush."
"Take your time."
Hailey thanked him sincerely before stepping off with Toby in her arms.
The youngest guard quickly carried the diaper bag.
Another opened the rear door of the SUV.
Inside waited warm blankets, bottled water, fresh flowers, and a certified postpartum nurse.
"Mr. Robertson ordered everything."
"He said your recovery comes first."
Hailey finally allowed herself to cry.
Not because Jasper had abandoned her.
But because someone still remembered she deserved kindness.
—
Two hours later...
The gates of Robertson Estate slowly opened.
Jasper had visited the property only once before the wedding.
At the time, Hailey had introduced it as "my father's old house."
She never mentioned that the estate covered over thirty acres and housed one of the most influential families in the country.
Finnley Robertson stood waiting at the front entrance.
The sixty-three-year-old billionaire didn't rush forward.
Instead, he carefully took Toby into his arms before embracing his daughter.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"I should've stepped in sooner."
Hailey shook her head.
"No."
"I needed to see who he truly was."
Finnley's jaw tightened.
"The investigation is finished."
Hailey looked up.
"What investigation?"
"I had people quietly watching after your marriage."
"I hoped I was wrong."
"But Jasper has been using Robertson connections for almost two years."
She froze.
"What?"
"He never knew they belonged to us."
"He simply assumed wealthy investors believed in his talent."
Finnley handed her a thick folder.
Inside were contracts.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Meeting schedules.
Every major investor funding Jasper's company had one thing in common.
Each of them had privately promised Finnley they would support Jasper...
Only because Hailey loved him.
Without those investments...
Jasper's company would have failed before launching its first product.
Hailey slowly closed the folder.
"So everything he built..."
Finnley nodded.
"...stood on a foundation he never earned."
For the first time, she understood why her father sounded so calm.

He wasn't planning revenge.
He was simply preparing to stop protecting a man who had mistaken borrowed success for his own brilliance.
