Chapter 18 - WHAT MICHAEL CHOSE

The company removed Diane from all operational authority pending the financial investigation.

Accounts were frozen.

Outside auditors were brought in.

The original trust went before attorneys who had no connection to Diane.

I didn’t care about most of that.

I cared about Emma.

I cared about Rachel.

I cared about Lauren and Noah.

And, despite everything, I cared about Michael.

That did not mean I forgave him.

Three nights after the board meeting, he found me at the kitchen table.

A suitcase stood near his feet.

“I’m going to stay at Robert’s.”

I looked up.

“Why?”

“Because you deserve space.”

I studied him.

A month earlier, I would have expected him to say I needed to understand.

That he had reasons.

That he meant well.

This time he said none of it.

“I lied to you.”

I remained silent.

“I let my fear decide what you were allowed to know.”

He swallowed.

“And Sunday night, when my mother hit you, I froze.”

My eyes burned.

“You did.”

“I can explain why.”

“I know.”

“But explaining it doesn’t excuse it.”

That mattered too.

Michael sat across from me.

“I spent my whole life surviving her by becoming quiet.”

He stared at his hands.

“When Dad got angry, he confronted things.”

“When Mom got angry, everybody disappeared.”

“I learned disappearing was safer.”

He looked at me.

“Then I watched our daughter see me do it.”

My throat tightened.

“I never want Emma to believe love means sitting still while someone hurts you.”

Neither did I.

Michael slid his house key across the table.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I’m asking for the chance to become someone who deserves it.”

I looked at the key.

“You don’t get that chance because you’re sorry.”

“I know.”

“You get it if your actions change.”

He nodded.

I pushed the key back.

“This is still your daughter’s home.”

Michael looked surprised.

“That does not mean everything is okay.”

“I understand.”

“You’re still staying with Robert.”

“I know.”

“And you tell Emma the truth in a way she can understand.”

“Yes.”

“And Noah?”

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Lauren agreed to let me meet him Saturday.”

I took a breath.

“Then don’t make that meeting about what you lost.”

Michael looked at me.

“Make it about what he needed.”

He nodded slowly.

“I will.”

For once, I believed he meant it.

May you like

Whether meaning it would be enough remained to be seen.
