Chapter 14 - KAREN TALKS

Karen agreed to meet only after Thomas promised he would be there.

She arrived at a private conference room wearing yesterday’s clothes.

Her hands shook.

Michael stared at the woman who had known him since childhood.

“You threatened my family.”

Karen began crying.

“I didn’t know Emma would answer the gate.”

“You went to my house.”

“Diane told me to recover your laptop.”

Lauren leaned forward.

“And the phone call?”

Karen looked at her.

“She ordered that too.”

“Why?”

“To scare you away.”

Michael’s expression turned cold.

“You obeyed.”

Karen lowered her head.

“For twenty-two years.”

The room fell silent.

Rachel opened her recorder only after Karen agreed.

Then Karen began talking.

Diane had controlled the company through fear for years.

She kept files on executives.

Affairs.

Debts.

Addictions.

Tax problems.

Anything useful.

When persuasion failed, she threatened humiliation.

When threats failed, she used money.

Karen had altered ledgers.

Created false consulting invoices.

Moved payments.

Copied signatures.

Michael interrupted.

“Claire’s signature?”

Karen nodded.

My stomach tightened.

“Frank’s?”

Another nod.

Michael looked sick.

“And the agreement with Lauren?”

Karen began crying harder.

“I prepared it.”

Lauren stared at her.

“You knew I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Michael didn’t know.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Diane threatened me.”

“Yes.”

Every answer struck harder than the last.

Lauren’s hands shook.

“Why?”

Karen whispered, “Because I was afraid of her.”

Lauren stood.

“I was twenty-five.”

Karen cried silently.

“I know.”

“I was pregnant.”

“I know.”

“I spent fourteen years telling my son his father didn’t know about him because I couldn’t make myself tell him the truth.”

Karen covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

Lauren’s eyes filled.

“You should be.”

Then Michael asked the question none of us expected.

“Why is my mother so terrified of the new trust?”

Karen stopped crying.

Her face changed.

Rachel noticed.

“What aren’t you telling us?”

Karen stared at the table.

“Frank didn’t just change ownership.”

Michael leaned closer.

“What did he do?”

“He ordered an audit.”

“So?”

Karen closed her eyes.

“The audit found nearly six million dollars missing.”

Nobody spoke.

Michael whispered, “Six million?”

Karen nodded.

“Diane moved it through shell companies.”

“Where did it go?”

“I don’t know all of it.”

Rachel asked, “What do you know?”

Karen opened her bag.

She removed a small black notebook.

“I kept my own ledger.”

Diane had spent years calling me a gold digger.

Now we were holding a handwritten record suggesting she had taken millions from her own family.

Karen pushed the notebook toward me.

“Page forty-three.”

I opened it.

One name appeared again and again.

Not Diane.

Not Lauren.

Not Michael.

Rachel.

I looked at my sister.

May you like

She looked just as shocked as I felt.
