Chapter 3: When the Mansion Turned Against Her

Vivian’s mask finally cracked.
Her perfect face twisted—not with guilt, but with rage.
“You think she loved you?” she hissed. “She controlled you. She controlled this house. She controlled every dollar.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“She was my mother.”
“She was in my way.”
The words landed like a confession.
Detective Warren turned slightly toward his partner. “You heard that.”
Vivian realized too late what she had said.
Her eyes widened.
“No. That’s not what I meant.”
Then Lily spoke again.
“She said Grandma was ruining everything.”
Everyone turned toward the child.
Lily reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out something small.
Vivian went pale.
It was a gold button.
One of the buttons from Vivian’s dress.
“I found it on the stairs,” Lily whispered. “After Grandma fell.”
Detective Warren took it carefully.
Daniel looked at the torn seam near Vivian’s wrist.
For the first time, Vivian had no explanation.
Outside, red and blue lights flashed against the mansion windows.
The house that once protected her now exposed her from every corner.
The maid.
The child.
The documents.
