Chapter 2: The Secret in the Drawer

The ambulance arrived within seven minutes.

Police followed three minutes later.

By then, Vivian had stopped crying fake tears.

She sat on the velvet bench beneath the chandelier, hands folded perfectly in her lap, her diamond bracelet glittering as if nothing in the world could touch her.

Daniel stood near the study door, holding Lily against his side.

His mother was alive—but barely.

A detective named Warren asked the first question quietly.

“Mrs. Harrington, why were you arguing with your mother-in-law?”

Vivian lifted her chin. “We weren’t arguing.”

Clara stepped forward.

“Yes, you were.”

Vivian’s eyes snapped toward the maid.

Clara swallowed hard but kept speaking. “Mrs. Harrington came home early. She heard Madam Eleanor on the phone with Mr. Harrington’s lawyer.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“My lawyer?”

Clara nodded. “Your mother found something in Vivian’s private drawer.”

Vivian stood. “This is absurd.”

But Daniel was already moving.

He crossed the foyer, entered the sitting room, and opened the locked rosewood cabinet Vivian always guarded.

Inside, beneath silk scarves and perfume boxes, he found a folder.

Bank transfers.

Forged signatures.

A life insurance policy.

And one document that made his blood run cold.

A private medical report showing Vivian had been slowly changing Eleanor Harrington’s medication for months.

Daniel stared at the papers until the words blurred.

Then he looked back at his wife.

“You weren’t trying to scare my mother,” he said. “You were trying to bury her.”
