Chapter 2 - The First Document

Claire did not cry until she reached the house.
Even then, the tears lasted less than a minute.
She sat in the dark kitchen with Julian’s laptop open in front of her.
His password had never been a secret.
CLAIRE0718.
Her name.
Her birthday.
The irony nearly made her laugh.
The desktop looked ordinary.
Investor presentations.
Financial reports.
Photographs from corporate dinners.
Then Claire noticed a folder buried inside another folder labeled TAX ARCHIVE.
It required a second password.
She tried their wedding anniversary.
Wrong.
Natalie’s birthday.
The folder opened.
Claire stared at the screen.
Inside were six documents.
The first was titled:
MARITAL ASSET RESTRUCTURING AGREEMENT.
Claire opened it.
Her mouth went dry.
The agreement transferred voting control of the Whitmore family investment company from Claire’s personal trust into a marital management entity controlled by Julian.
The signature page already contained Julian’s signature.
There was a blank line for Claire.
Tomorrow’s date appeared beneath it.
Tomorrow.
Julian had told her his attorney needed routine signatures for “tax restructuring.”
Claire had intended to sign without reading every page.
That was what fourteen years of trust looked like.
She kept scrolling.
If the agreement became effective, Julian could authorize asset sales.
He could borrow against Claire’s inherited shares.
He could restructure the trust.
And if they divorced afterward, several protections in the prenuptial agreement could be challenged because Claire had voluntarily transferred control during the marriage.
Claire sat back.
The affair was not the entire betrayal.
It was preparation.
Her phone buzzed.
JULIAN.
She watched it ring.
Then a text appeared.
Forgot laptop?
Dinner starts in twenty.
Claire looked at the computer.
She typed back.
Found it.
Traffic is awful.
I’ll bring it soon.
Three dots appeared immediately.
Thanks, beautiful.
Love you.
Claire closed her eyes.
Then she reopened them.
There was another file.
Its name meant nothing to her.
PROJECT HAWTHORNE - CONFIDENTIAL.
Claire clicked it.
A scanned cover sheet appeared.
ATTORNEY-CLIENT PRIVILEGED.
Below that was a handwritten note.
DO NOT LET CLAIRE SEE DOCUMENT TWO.
Claire’s heartbeat began pounding.
She scrolled past the first attachment.
Then she reached the second document.
The first line contained her father’s name.
The second contained Natalie’s.
And the third sentence made Claire grip the edge of the table.
Because according to that document, the man Claire had mourned as her father for eight years had discovered a secret before he died.
A secret involving Natalie.
Julian.
May you like
And Claire herself.
