Chapter 19 - The Last Secret About Thomas

Evelyn was recovering at Claire’s house under federal protection.

Sarah sat beside her.

For the first time, Claire looked at both women together.

The mother who gave birth to her.

The mother who raised her.

Neither relationship was simple.

Neither could be repaired in a day.

Claire placed Julian’s statement on the table.

“He says Dad didn’t die naturally.”

Evelyn went still.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Claire’s voice hardened.

“Not one more lie.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Thomas found evidence against Richard and Edward.”

“We know that.”

“He planned to go to federal authorities.”

Claire waited.

“The night he died, Edward came to the house.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“They argued.”

“Then?”

“Thomas left.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I followed him.”

Claire stared.

Evelyn explained that Thomas drove toward Rebecca’s office.

Edward followed.

At a traffic light, Thomas suddenly lost control of his car.

The official report blamed a cardiac event.

But Evelyn had seen Edward’s mechanic near Thomas’s car earlier that afternoon.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“You said nothing?”

“I was afraid they would come after you.”

Claire slammed her palm against the table.

“They already had!”

Sarah flinched.

Claire stepped away.

She felt as if every adult in her childhood had chosen secrecy over truth.

Then Evelyn reached into her bag.

“There’s one thing I never gave them.”

A small memory card.

“Thomas had a dashboard camera.”

Claire stared.

“I removed the card before police arrived.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because it showed me following him.”

Claire almost screamed.

Rebecca played the recording.

The image shook slightly.

Thomas was driving.

His voice recorded a phone call.

“If anything happens, Edward did it.”

Then headlights appeared behind him.

A dark SUV.

Thomas’s brakes failed.

He tried to steer.

The video ended as the car crossed the median.

The SUV’s license plate was visible for one second.

Investigators traced it.

Registered owner in 2018:

Mercer Strategic Holdings.

Julian’s company.

Claire confronted Julian one final time.

He stared at the image.

“I didn’t own that SUV then.”

“Your company did.”

“My father controlled the fleet.”

“Prove it.”

Julian produced old insurance records.

Richard Mercer had signed for the vehicle.

Julian had not killed Thomas.

But he had learned the truth afterward.

And buried it.

Claire’s voice broke.

“You knew your father helped kill mine.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed married to me.”

“I was afraid of losing everything.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“That’s the difference between us.”

“What?”

“I lost everything I believed.”

She stepped toward the door.

“And I’m still telling the truth.”

Behind her, Julian whispered, “What happens now?”

Claire looked back.

May you like

“Consequences.”
