Chapter 2 – Twenty-Seven Pages of Truth
Daniel flipped through the first few pages.
His breathing slowed.
Then stopped.
Every overseas transfer.
Every hidden investment.
Every shell company registered under fake directors.
Every payment made to the woman he had claimed was "only a business consultant."
Emma watched him without satisfaction.
Without anger.
Only exhaustion.
"You hired someone to spy on me?"
Daniel finally whispered.
"No."
She answered quietly.
"You hired them."
He looked up.
"What?"
Jonathan adjusted his glasses.
"Three years ago your corporation retained my forensic accounting division during an acquisition audit."
Daniel stared blankly.
Jonathan continued.
"The investigation uncovered far more than corporate fraud."
Lauren leaned forward.
"What are you talking about?"
Jonathan opened another folder.
"Mr. Carter has systematically hidden marital assets for nearly four years."
Daniel slammed the papers shut.
"This is confidential."
"It was."
Jonathan replied.
"Until your wife became the legal owner of half the companies involved."
Silence.
Emma finally spoke.
"I signed documents you told me were tax forms."
Daniel couldn't look at her.
"They weren't."
Jonathan calmly laid another folder beside the first.
"Those signatures transferred ownership percentages."
Daniel's mother suddenly stood.
"Emma... surely we can settle this privately."
Emma smiled sadly.
"For years I begged to settle things privately."
Nobody had listened.
