Chapter 1 – The Ring That Broke the Silence

The sound of Emma Carter's wedding ring touching polished oak lasted less than a second.
Yet somehow, it silenced twelve people at once.
Crystal glasses remained suspended halfway to waiting lips. Silverware stopped clinking. Even the soft jazz drifting through the ceiling speakers suddenly felt inappropriate, as though the room itself understood something irreversible had just happened.
Daniel Carter forced a laugh.
"Emma... what exactly is this?"
She folded her hands neatly in front of her.
No trembling.
No tears.
"I've decided I'm finished."
His smile stayed frozen.
"Finished with dinner?"
"No."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Finished with this marriage."
Around the table, Daniel's parents exchanged uneasy glances.
His younger sister Lauren rolled her eyes.
"Oh, for God's sake, Emma. You're making a scene because Daniel forgot your anniversary dinner?"
Emma slowly turned toward her.
"You think this is about tonight?"
Nobody answered.
The grandfather clock beside the fireplace chimed once.
Then the front door opened.
Exactly 8:15.
Jonathan Reed entered carrying an old leather briefcase that looked completely out of place inside the luxurious Carter mansion.
Daniel frowned.
"What is he doing here?"
Jonathan removed his coat with practiced calm.
"You requested that I arrive at precisely eight-fifteen, Mrs. Carter."
Emma nodded once.
"Thank you, Jonathan."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"What the hell is this?"
Without speaking, Jonathan placed the worn briefcase onto the dining table.
The brass locks clicked open.
Inside weren't stacks of money.
There were only folders.
Simple cream-colored folders.
But Emma looked at them as though they weighed a thousand pounds.
Jonathan carefully slid the first file toward Daniel.
"I suggest you begin with this one."
Daniel glanced down.
The title alone drained the color from his face.

His confident smile disappeared.
