Chapter 6: The Last Goodbye

The judge awarded me sole legal and physical custody of Parker.
Tyler's visitation would remain suspended unless approved by the court after extensive counseling and parenting evaluations.
The criminal case ended weeks later with a guilty verdict for criminal neglect.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.
Microphones stretched toward my face.
"Do you have anything to say to your ex-husband?"
I looked across the courthouse steps.
Tyler stood alone.
No friends.
No family.
No birthday celebrations.
Only consequences.
I answered with one sentence.
"The day I begged for help, my husband celebrated turning thirty."
I glanced down at Parker sleeping peacefully against my shoulder.
"I celebrated surviving."
Then I walked away without looking back.
Months later, we moved into a small house with blue shutters and a tiny garden.
Mrs. Henderson visited every Sunday.
My mother babysat while I returned to work.
Life wasn't perfect.
Healing never is.
One afternoon, Parker took his first steps across the living room.
He stumbled into my arms, laughing.
I held him tightly, realizing something that had taken me nearly a year to understand.
The worst day of my life had also become the first day of my freedom.
Tyler had left believing he deserved a peaceful birthday weekend.
Instead, he lost his marriage, his reputation, his freedom, and the privilege of watching his son grow up.
As for me, every birthday afterward became a celebration of something far greater than getting older.

It became a celebration that we were both still alive.
And this time, no one could ever take that away.
