Chapter 2: The Moment Between Silence and Breath

At first, nothing happened.

The monitor stayed flat.

The tone stayed unbroken.

The hospital stayed frozen.

Ethan’s voice broke the silence again.

“What is she doing to my son?!”

Claire sobbed harder. “Please… someone stop her…”

But Dr. Thompson didn’t move.

Because she couldn’t explain what she was seeing.

The girl wasn’t pressing.

Wasn’t performing CPR.

Wasn’t doing anything medical.

She was… still.

Like she was listening to something no one else could hear.

Seconds passed.

Then more.

The machines kept declaring the same truth.

Death.

Final.

Irreversible.

Until—

A flicker.

Nurse Kelly leaned forward. “Wait…”

The line on the monitor twitched.

Once.

Then again.

A gasp escaped someone in the room.

Dr. Thompson froze.

“That’s impossible…”

The line rose.

Weak.

Uncertain.

Then—

A sound.

Soft.

Barely audible.

A heartbeat.

Claire gasped violently. “Ethan—!”

He didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because his entire world had narrowed to the crib.

To the child.

To the impossible rhythm returning to a body that had been silent minutes ago.

Another beat.

Stronger.

Then another.

The flatline was gone.

Replaced by life.

Dr. Thompson whispered, shaken, “We’re getting spontaneous cardiac activity…”

“No,” Kelly said. “That’s not spontaneous…”

But she had no other word.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Who are you?” he demanded at the girl.

The child didn’t look at him.

Not yet.

She kept her hands on Mason’s chest.

One final second.

Then she exhaled softly.

And the monitor stabilized.

A steady heartbeat filled the room.

Real.

Undeniable.

The girl opened her eyes.

May you like

Removed her hands.

And stepped back.
