Chapter 1: The Girl Who Shouldn’t Have Been There

“Don’t touch him!”
Ethan Callister’s voice cracked through St. Catherine Medical Center’s pediatric ER like a gunshot.
But no one stopped her.
Because the machines had already decided.
The monitor above baby Mason Callister’s crib held a single, flat line.
A long, unbroken tone filled the room.
Death had spoken.
Six months old. Barely old enough to recognize his mother’s voice. Gone.
Claire Callister collapsed into her husband’s chest, shaking so violently Ethan thought she might break.
“No… no, please… not our baby…”
Ethan Callister had built Callister Holdings from nothing. He had negotiated billion-dollar mergers, dismantled hostile takeovers, crushed competitors who thought themselves untouchable.
But none of that mattered here.
Not in a hospital room where his son wasn’t breathing.
Dr. Maya Thompson didn’t look up from the table.
“Time of death—”
“Don’t you dare say it,” Ethan snapped.
Her hand hesitated above the chart.
The silence that followed was heavier than any sentence.
Then—
A sound.
Not from the machines.
From the doorway.
A child stood there.
No one had seen her enter.
Small. Barefoot. Maybe ten years old.
Her presence didn’t fit the room. Not the sterile walls. Not the emergency chaos. Not the grief.
Nurse Kelly Reed stepped forward.
“You can’t be in here.”
The girl didn’t respond.
She walked past her.
One step.
Then another.
Straight toward Mason’s crib.
Ethan moved instantly.
“Get her out!”
But something strange happened.
No one obeyed.
Not security.
Not the nurses.
Not even Dr. Thompson.
Because something about the girl made command feel irrelevant.
She reached the crib.
Placed both hands gently on Mason’s chest.
May you like
Closed her eyes.
And the room changed.
