Chapter 9 - THE HEARING FOR MY CHILDREN

Helen’s guardianship petition was not automatically dismissed after her arrest.
Her attorney argued that the criminal accusations were unproven.
He claimed the children needed stability while my battery and embezzlement cases remained pending.
The family court hearing began three weeks after the party.
Helen entered wearing a gray suit.
She looked smaller without the estate, jewelry, and servants.
She also looked dangerous.
Robert appeared by video from the county jail.
Caroline testified in person under a cooperation agreement.
The court-appointed child advocate sat beside Rebecca, Samuel, and Jacob.
I did not want the children inside the courtroom.
Rebecca insisted.
“She lied about us.”
“I want the judge to see us.”
The judge interviewed them privately first.
Then the hearing began.
Helen’s attorney described me as absent.
I traveled frequently for work.
I hired caregivers.
I allowed the children to spend weekends at the estate.
He showed photographs of me attending construction conferences.
He described professional success as parental neglect.
Marcus responded with school records, medical appointments, and employee calendars.
Every trip had been scheduled around the children.
Their caregiver, Ms. Paula, testified that Helen repeatedly canceled her access during estate visits.
“She said servants were unnecessary because the children should learn to care for themselves.”
The attorney asked whether children should have chores.
“Yes,” Paula answered.
“Age-appropriate chores.”
“Carrying overloaded glass trays while hungry is not a chore.”
The full party video was played.
Helen watched herself call the children filthy.
She showed no emotion.
Caroline testified about the forged documents.
Dr. Mercer described the false evaluations.
Daniel described the financial conspiracy.
Peter described Helen’s instruction to remove the children from the estate.
Then Isabella’s recording filled the courtroom.
“Robert believes everything built by a Hale man belongs to the Hale family.”
“He does not consider our children true Hales.”
Helen closed her eyes.
Marcus approached her.
“Did you believe your grandchildren were inferior because of their mother?”
“No.”
“Did you call them filthy?”
“I was referring to their clothing.”
“They were wearing clean formal clothes.”
“They had been playing outside.”
“Did you tell them they could not eat until the guests finished?”
“They needed discipline.”
“Did you authorize Peter to enter the estate and remove them?”
“I believed Thomas was unstable.”
“Based on the false report you paid Dr. Mercer to create?”
Her attorney objected.
The judge allowed the question.
Helen’s composure finally broke.
“Thomas has always been weak when it comes to those children.”
The room became silent.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“What does weakness mean to you?”
“He gives them whatever they want.”
“He allows them to speak when adults are talking.”
“He lets them believe they are equal.”
Rebecca began crying quietly.
I reached for her hand.
Marcus looked at Helen.
“Equal to whom?”
Helen realized the trap too late.
“To the family.”
The judge removed her glasses.
“Mrs. Hale, these children are the family.”
Helen said nothing.
The petition was denied permanently.
The court issued a no-contact order protecting all three children.
Robert and Helen were barred from making future custody claims without court approval.
As we left, Samuel looked toward his grandmother.
She did not look at him.
He tightened his hand around mine.
“Does she hate us?”
I knelt beside him.
May you like
“She hates losing control.”
“That is not the same as knowing you.”
