Chapter 5 - ISABELLA’S LAST WARNING

The recording came from Isabella’s old tablet.
Robert had hidden it inside a locked cabinet.
The device contained a video dated nine days before my wife died.
Isabella sat in her hospital bed.
A scarf covered her hair.
Her voice was weak.
But her eyes remained clear.
“Thomas.”
“If you are watching this, someone prevented me from giving it to you.”
I pressed one hand against my mouth.
The detective paused the recording.
“Do you want to continue?”
“Yes.”
Isabella looked directly into the camera.
“Your father asked me to place him in charge of the children’s trust.”
“I refused.”
“He said you were too emotional to manage money after I died.”
“He already has a doctor willing to describe your grief as instability.”
My body went cold.
The plan had begun before Isabella’s death.
She continued.
“Robert believes everything built by a Hale man belongs to the Hale family.”
“He does not consider our children true Hales.”
“He asked me whether my parents’ restaurant money should really pass to children with their blood.”
“I told him never to contact me again.”
“He laughed.”
Isabella’s breathing became strained.
“He said I would not be here to stop him.”
The recording ended.
I sat without moving.
Detective Monroe placed a second file on the screen.
It showed Robert visiting Isabella’s hospital room after I left one evening.
He remained inside for fourteen minutes.
Hospital staff had no record of authorizing the visit.
The camera outside the room had no audio.
But Isabella’s heart monitor alarm activated while he was inside.
A nurse entered.
Robert left.
Isabella survived another nine days.
There was no evidence he caused her death.
But there was evidence he frightened and threatened a dying woman.
He then stole the money she had tried to protect.
My anger became so intense that everything around me seemed distant.
Marcus touched my shoulder.
“Thomas.”
“I should have known.”
“Isabella hid it because she was trying to protect you.”
“She should not have needed to.”
“No.”
He turned the tablet off.
“But blame belongs to the person who threatened her.”
Not to her.
Not to me.
Robert had trained all of us to carry his choices as our failures.
That ended now.
The next morning, the district attorney charged Helen with financial exploitation and conspiracy.
Dr. Mercer was arrested at the airport.
He had purchased a one-way ticket to Costa Rica.
Investigators found seventy thousand dollars in cash inside his luggage.
The serial numbers matched a withdrawal from the children’s medical trust.
Mercer agreed to cooperate.
He admitted Robert paid him to write false evaluations.
He also admitted creating reports about the children.
Rebecca was described as manipulative.
Samuel was described as anxious and dishonest.
Jacob was described as developmentally delayed.
Mercer had never examined any of them.
The reports were intended to support Helen’s guardianship petition.
If the petition succeeded, my parents would control the children.
Their home.
Their medical trust.
Their inheritance.
And the life insurance money that would become available if I died.
The policy on my life had been opened using a forged signature from my company.
An insurance broker connected to Robert approved it.
The broker claimed he believed I had consented.
The investigation expanded again.
The party was no longer an isolated act of humiliation.
It was a performance designed to produce witnesses.
My children would be filmed working.
Crying.
Dropping glasses.
My parents planned to describe them as neglected and poorly behaved.
They would claim I left them at the estate without proper care.
The cousins’ videos were supposed to support the guardianship case.
Instead, Lucas’s recording exposed the abuse.

Robert had ordered the party cameras turned toward my children.
He created the evidence that would destroy him.
