Chapter 9 - Caleb’s Confession

Caleb aimed the revolver at Madison.

No one moved.

Adrian pressed one hand against the blood above his eyebrow.

“How did you get here?”

Caleb smiled.

“Mother’s guards still think family loyalty means something.”

Margaret appeared behind him.

Her wrists were bound with a silk scarf.

Her face was bruised.

“Adrian, do not listen to him.”

Caleb pushed her into a chair.

“You spent thirty-five years telling me Adrian was the responsible one.”

“The brilliant one.”

“The heir.”

He looked at his brother.

“You received the company.”

“The estate.”

“Father’s respect.”

“And then you married Claire.”

Adrian’s voice was flat.

“So you killed her.”

Caleb’s smile disappeared.

“I did not intend for her to die.”

Madison laughed bitterly.

“You cut the brake line.”

“I weakened it.”

“You said the car would fail near the cottage road.”

“You said she would panic, miss the charity dinner, and look unstable.”

Caleb turned the gun toward her.

“You were the one who followed her in the storm.”

“You forced her off the road.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Adrian looked from one to the other.

“What happened?”

Madison stared at the gun.

“Claire found the original foundation records here.”

“She told me she was taking them to Adrian.”

“I begged her to wait.”

“She refused.”

“I followed her.”

“She drove slowly because of the rain.”

“I pulled beside her.”

“I wanted her to stop.”

“She accelerated.”

“The brakes failed.”

“The car broke through the guardrail.”

Her voice cracked.

“I called Caleb.”

“Not the police.”

“He said if Claire was alive, everything was over.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Caleb raised the revolver.

“Stay back.”

“What did you do during those twenty-three minutes?”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“We climbed down.”

“She was conscious.”

Rachel held Emma tighter.

Natalie had once said Claire’s injuries suggested she survived the initial crash.

The coroner dismissed the possibility.

Adrian forced himself to ask.

“What did she say?”

Caleb looked at Madison.

Madison began crying.

“She asked us to help her.”

“She said she was pregnant.”

Adrian felt something inside him break.

Caleb continued.

“She threatened to tell you everything.”

“So you left her.”

“I told Vale to delay the ambulance.”

“You left my wife alive in that car.”

Caleb shouted.

“She was going to destroy all of us.”

“No.”

“She was going to expose you.”

Adrian looked at Margaret.

“What did you know?”

Margaret’s voice was barely audible.

“Caleb called me.”

“Before the ambulance?”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell him?”

She began shaking.

“I told him to call Vale.”

“I thought Vale would protect the family.”

“You knew Claire was alive.”

“I did not understand how badly she was injured.”

“You knew.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer silenced the room.

Caleb turned toward the fireplace.

“The original records are here.”

“Claire hid them before she drove away.”

He forced Madison to search the wall.

Vale regained consciousness and reached for the fallen poker.

Daniel kicked it away.

Police sirens sounded in the distance.

Caleb panicked.

He grabbed Emma from Rachel’s arms and pressed the gun near the child’s shoulder.

Everyone froze.

Emma did not scream.

She looked directly at Caleb.

“You are the man who makes Grandma cry.”

Caleb’s hand trembled.

Then a floorboard shifted beneath him.

He looked down.

The old wood cracked.

Caleb fell through the floor.

Emma slipped from his arms.

Adrian caught her before she struck the edge.

The revolver disappeared into the darkness below.

Caleb landed in the cellar.

Beside him stood a metal safe.

Claire’s initials were scratched across its door.
