Chapter 4 - The Mother’s Bargain

Margaret did not answer immediately.
She walked out of the hidden nursery and returned to Claire’s sitting room.
Adrian followed.
The others remained close enough to hear.
Margaret stood near the window.
Below them, guests crowded the ballroom while security preserved their phones and statements.
“I knew Caleb was in financial trouble,” she said.
“How much trouble?” Adrian asked.
“Forty million dollars.”
Adrian stared at his brother.
Caleb laughed nervously.
“That number is exaggerated.”
Margaret continued.
“He invested in a chain of private clinics.”
“The business collapsed.”
“He borrowed against assets he did not own.”
“Madison helped him create documents that made it appear the foundation had guaranteed the loans.”
Natalie looked toward Madison’s phone inside Daniel’s evidence pouch.
“So Claire discovered the fraud.”
Margaret nodded.
“She came to me.”
“She wanted to tell Adrian immediately.”
“I asked her to wait forty-eight hours.”
“Why?”
“Because exposing Caleb would have destroyed him.”
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“You asked my wife to protect the man stealing from my family.”
“I asked her to protect your brother.”
“Those are not the same thing.”
Margaret turned.
“You do not understand what happened after your father died.”
“You inherited everything.”
“Caleb inherited the shame of being second.”
Caleb stepped into the room.
“I never asked you to explain me.”
Margaret looked at him.
“I spent my entire life explaining you.”
Adrian opened Claire’s notebook again.
“What did you mean when you said you would handle me?”
Margaret’s eyes shifted away.
“I told Madison that I would convince you Claire was under stress.”
“You planned to make me doubt her.”
“I planned to keep the family intact.”
“After Claire died?”
“I believed the accident ended the immediate danger.”
Natalie stared at her in horror.
“You knew Madison and Caleb had threatened Claire.”
“I knew they had argued.”
“That is not an answer.”
Margaret finally lost control.
“I did not know they would kill her.”
The words hung in the room.
Caleb stepped backward.
Adrian turned toward him.
“Would kill her?”
Margaret realized what she had admitted.
She pressed a hand to her throat.
“I meant if they had killed her.”
“No.”
“You said it as though you had already accepted it.”
Caleb moved toward the door.
Daniel blocked him again.
Adrian faced his brother.
“Give me your phone.”
Caleb folded his arms.
“No.”
Daniel removed it.
Caleb shouted and tried to grab it back.
During the struggle, a small key fell from his pocket.
Emma pointed.
“That opens the garage box.”
Caleb froze.
Rachel whispered to her daughter.
“How do you know that?”
“I saw him hide it.”
Adrian picked up the key.
“What garage box?”
Emma led them through the service stairs toward the underground garage.
She stopped beside Claire’s damaged Mercedes.
Adrian had refused to sell or destroy the car after the investigation.
It remained covered beneath a gray tarp.
Behind it stood a locked metal cabinet.
The key fit.
Inside were old vehicle records, brake components, and a rain-stained envelope.
Daniel opened it carefully.
The contents included photographs taken at the crash scene before police arrived.
One photograph showed Claire’s car in the ravine.
Another showed the severed brake line.

The final photograph showed Caleb standing beside Madison beneath an umbrella.
The timestamp was twenty-three minutes before anyone called emergency services.
