CHAPTER 5 — Home

Six months later, Reed Mansion looked different.
The ballroom still glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.
But there were toys beneath the grand piano.
Finger paintings hung beside priceless artwork.
Laughter echoed through hallways that had once felt empty.
Ethan had stepped down as CEO, choosing instead to chair the company while working from home.
His investors called it reckless.
His son called it breakfast.
Every morning, Oliver ran into his father's office carrying a storybook.
Every evening, Claire read it to both of them.
One autumn afternoon, Ethan knelt in the mansion garden.
There were no reporters.
No photographers.
No extravagant proposal.
Only Oliver standing between them holding a tiny velvet ring box.
"Daddy said..."
the little boy whispered proudly,
"...families choose each other."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
She looked at Ethan.
"I never wanted your money."
"I know."
"I only wanted Oliver to feel loved."
Ethan smiled.
"And that's why you're the only woman I could ever trust with my heart."
She said yes.
Not because he was a billionaire.
Not because he owned the mansion.
But because they had already become a family long before either of them admitted it.
Months later, as guests celebrated their wedding, Margaret quietly placed a framed photograph on the reception table.
It showed Claire asleep in a rocking chair.
A feverish baby rested against her chest.
The timestamp was from two years earlier.
Underneath the picture was a handwritten note from Ethan:
"The woman who became my son's mother... long before she became my wife."
No one in the room spoke.
Because everyone understood the same truth.
Love isn't proven by grand speeches or expensive gifts.
May you like
Sometimes...
it's simply the person who stays awake while everyone else is asleep.
