CHAPTER 3 — The Hidden Camera

Ethan didn't sleep that night.
Instead, he walked into the mansion's security room.
"Pull every recording from Oliver's nursery."
The technician looked confused.
"How far back, sir?"
"All of it."
Hours passed.
Video after video appeared on the monitors.
There was Claire.
Night after night.
Carrying Oliver through endless fevers.
Reading bedtime stories after midnight.
Sleeping in a chair beside his crib because he refused to sleep unless he could hear her breathing.
Then Ethan noticed something else.
The timestamps.
Every recording began after Claire's shift officially ended.
She had never claimed a single extra hour.
Never submitted overtime.
Never complained.
Then another clip appeared.
Oliver, burning with fever.
Claire desperately calling someone.
No answer.
She called again.
No answer.
Finally...
she wrapped the child in a blanket and drove him herself to the emergency room.
The date froze Ethan's blood.
It was his birthday.
He remembered exactly where he had been.
Accepting Entrepreneur of the Year before hundreds of investors.
His acceptance speech was still online.
He had thanked everyone...
except the woman who was keeping his son alive.
Ethan quietly removed his wedding ring from his pocket.
He still carried it every day.
"I failed both of you," he whispered to the empty room.
Behind him, the security technician spoke carefully.
"Sir..."
Ethan looked up.
"There are several recordings someone tried to delete."
"Who?"
The technician zoomed into the access log.
The password belonged to only one person.
Margaret.
Ethan stared in disbelief.
"You told me the truth tonight."
Margaret nodded with tears in her eyes.
"I did."
"So why erase the videos?"
She broke down.
"Because Claire begged me."
"She didn't want Oliver to grow up believing his father abandoned him."
Ethan closed his eyes.
