Chapter 4: The Wedding That Became a Trial

The ballroom doors opened.
Every guest turned.
The string quartet stopped mid-note.
Olivia’s mother rose from the front row, confused and embarrassed.
The priest lowered his book.
Ethan walked down the aisle, not with his bride, but with Clara and Lily beside him.
Whispers exploded across the room.
Olivia hurried after him.
“Ethan, don’t do this.”
He ignored her.
At the altar, he turned to face the guests.
His voice was calm.
“My wedding is canceled.”
Gasps filled the room.
Olivia froze.
Richard stood at the back, his face dark with warning.
Ethan lifted the DNA envelope.
“I found out today that I have a daughter.”
The whispers stopped.
Lily hid behind Clara.
Ethan continued.
“And I found out the woman I was about to marry helped erase her from my life.”
Olivia’s face turned white.
“That is insane,” she said. “He’s emotional. Someone stop this.”
Then Clara stepped forward.
Her hands were shaking, but her voice did not break.
“I was kidnapped before I could tell Ethan I was pregnant. I was forced to sign papers. I was told if I came back, my daughter would suffer.”
A guest stood up.
Then another.
Phones came out.
Olivia looked around and realized the room was no longer hers.
Then the real blow came.
The ballroom doors opened again.
Two police officers entered.
Behind them was Olivia’s former driver.
A thin man with tired eyes.
He pointed directly at Olivia.
“She paid me to move Clara across state lines,” he said. “And Mr. Hale paid me to stay quiet.”
Richard’s face collapsed.
Olivia screamed, “You signed a deal!”
The room froze.
Ethan looked at her.
That was the confession.
Small.
Angry.
Fatal.
The officers moved toward Olivia.
She backed away, her wedding dress dragging across the aisle like a torn flag.
“No,” she whispered. “No, you don’t understand. I did it for us.”
Ethan stared at her with empty eyes.
“There was never an us.”
As the officers reached for her, Olivia suddenly smiled.
Not at Ethan.
At Clara.
“You still don’t know everything,” she said.
Clara went still.
May you like
Olivia leaned closer as the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
“Ask her why she really came back today.”
