Chapter 3: The Bride’s Smile

Olivia recovered quickly.

She always did.

She stepped into the room, closing the door behind her as if she could shut the whole nightmare away.

“Ethan, whatever she told you, she’s lying.”

Clara flinched, but she did not look away.

“You told me if I ever came back, you’d make sure Lily disappeared too.”

Ethan’s head snapped toward Olivia.

Olivia’s eyes widened just enough.

A mistake.

Small.

But Ethan caught it.

“Is that true?” he asked.

Olivia let out a soft breath, almost offended.

“Look at her, Ethan. She shows up on our wedding day, bruised, desperate, holding some child, and you believe her?”

Lily lowered her head.

That broke something in him.

Ethan stepped between Olivia and the little girl.

“Don’t talk about her like that.”

Olivia’s expression hardened.

For the first time, the mask cracked.

“You were mine,” she whispered.

The room went silent.

Clara’s face paled.

Ethan stared at her.

“What did you just say?”

Olivia’s smile returned, but it was thinner now.

“I saved you from her. Clara was going to ruin your life. She was pregnant, poor, unstable, and your father was never going to accept it.”

“My father?” Ethan said.

Clara looked confused.

Olivia’s eyes shifted.

Too late.

Ethan saw it.

“My father knew?”

Olivia said nothing.

Ethan stormed past her and ripped open the door.

The hallway outside was empty except for one man standing near the staircase.

Ethan’s father.

Richard Hale.

Black suit.

Silver hair.

No surprise on his face.

Only disappointment.

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

“You knew,” Ethan said.

Richard adjusted his cufflink.

“I knew enough.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Lily began to cry silently.

Ethan walked toward his father, every step colder than the last.

“You let me bury a woman who was alive.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I protected the family.”

Ethan looked back at Olivia.

Then at Clara.

Then at the child he had never been allowed to meet.

“No,” he said. “You protected your name.”

From downstairs, a wedding guest called out Ethan’s name.

The ceremony was supposed to begin.

Ethan looked at Olivia.

Then he did the one thing she never expected.

He took Clara’s hand.

May you like

Then Lily’s.

And walked straight toward the ballroom.
