Chapter 4 – A Different Kind of Wealth

One year later.

The old chapel still stood.

Its bells still echoed every Saturday afternoon.

This time, I returned wearing a simple navy-blue dress instead of white.

Not as a bride.

As the keynote speaker for a charity gala funding scholarships for students from low-income families.

The foundation had been built using the whistleblower award granted after the successful prosecution of Vale Holdings.

Every dollar helped someone who had once been told they weren't good enough because they had too little.

After my speech, a little girl approached me.

"My mom says rich people always win."

I knelt beside her.

"What do you think?"

She shrugged.

"I don't know."

I smiled.

"Money can buy influence."

"It can buy buildings."

"It can even buy expensive weddings."

"But it can't buy integrity."

"And sooner or later..."

"That's the only wealth people remember."

The audience stood in applause.

As they did, I noticed Adrian sitting quietly in the back row.

Older.

Humbler.

Alone.

He didn't approach me.

He simply nodded once before leaving through the side door.

I wished him peace.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Because forgiveness didn't mean returning to the past.

It meant refusing to let the past own my future.

I stepped outside into the warm afternoon sunlight.

A breeze carried the sound of chapel bells across the hills.

A year earlier, those bells had marked the end of the life I'd planned.

Now they celebrated the life I had built myself.

The Vales had believed they destroyed a poor girl.

Instead...

They created a woman who could never again be bought, intimidated, or defined by anyone else's name.

And as I walked away with my head held high, I realized something that no fortune could ever purchase.

May you like

The greatest revenge had never been their downfall.

It had been my freedom.
