Chapter 3 – The Fall of the Vales

Three weeks later...
The first headline appeared before sunrise.
FEDERAL INVESTIGATION TARGETS VALE HOLDINGS.
By noon, every financial network carried the story.
Trading was halted.
Investors panicked.
Banks froze billions in assets.
Federal agents entered the company's headquarters carrying sealed warrants.
Mrs. Vale watched from the executive floor as employees emptied filing cabinets into evidence boxes.
For the first time in decades...
No one obeyed her.
My phone rang nonstop.
Reporters.
Former colleagues.
People who had ignored me for years.
I answered none of them.
Instead, I returned to the neighborhood where I'd grown up.
The small bakery my late mother had loved was struggling to stay open.
The owner recognized me immediately.
"I heard about your wedding."
I smiled gently.
"So did everyone."
She hesitated.
"I'm sorry."
For once...
The words didn't hurt.
Because I had stopped measuring my worth by someone else's rejection.
That evening Adrian appeared outside my apartment.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive suits were gone.
His tie was crooked.
His confidence had disappeared.
"I need to explain."
"There isn't anything left to explain."
"They're blaming me."
"They should."
"I chose you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You chose comfort."
"You chose inheritance."
"You chose silence."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I was scared."
"I was too."
I stepped closer.
"The difference is..."
"I refused to become like them."
He reached toward me.
I stepped back.
The distance between us wasn't measured in feet anymore.
It was measured in character.
As he walked away into the rain, I realized something unexpected.
May you like
I wasn't watching the love of my life leave.
I was watching the biggest mistake of his.
