Chapter 3 – The Secret Isabella Refused to Bury

Adrian stood and faced his mother.
"Why?"
Eleanor folded her hands with practiced elegance.
"I don't owe anyone an explanation."
"You framed my son!"
"I protected this family."
"No," Adrian snapped.
"You protected yourself."
For the first time in years, his voice echoed louder than hers inside the Whitmore mansion.
Eleanor's eyes hardened.
"That boy is the reason you've become weak."
Noah flinched.
Isabella immediately stepped in front of him.
"Don't."
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
"You think I hate him because of today?"
She looked directly at Isabella.
"I hated him the day he was born."
Adrian stared.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor opened a nearby drawer and removed a thick envelope.
"I was hoping I'd never need this."
She threw it onto the marble floor.
Old photographs scattered everywhere.
Hospital records.
Letters.
DNA reports.
Adrian picked one up.
His world stopped.
The document showed Isabella's signature.
Beneath it...
A second signature.
Dr. Henry Collins.
Date...
Eight years ago.
Eleanor smiled.
"You've always believed Noah was born prematurely."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"He was."
"No."
She folded her arms.
"He was adopted."
The room froze.
Noah looked up in confusion.
"What does adopted mean?"
Isabella closed her eyes.
She had hoped this day would never come.
Adrian looked between the papers and his wife.
"You lied to me?"
"No."
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I was trying to save him."
She picked up another document.
"This is the real report."
Adrian read it.
His breathing became uneven.
Eight years earlier...
A fire destroyed the maternity ward.
Several newborn babies disappeared.
One infant was found alive.
No identity.
No family.
That baby became Noah.
Isabella had volunteered as a nurse.
She had refused to let the abandoned child enter the foster system.
She adopted him before ever meeting Adrian.
Tears filled Adrian's eyes.
"You loved him before you even knew me..."
"I've loved him every day since."
Noah quietly took Isabella's hand.
"You're still my mommy."
She smiled through tears.
"Always."
But Eleanor remained cold.
"I never accepted another man's blood carrying the Whitmore name."
Adrian looked at her with absolute disgust.
"You've spent eight years punishing a child for being abandoned?"
"No."
Eleanor answered without emotion.
May you like
"I punished him because he wasn't worthy."
That sentence ended something inside Adrian forever.
