Chapter 2: Fire Never Truly Dies

Three weeks later, the attack came.

It happened during breakfast.

The explosion shattered every window facing the garden.

Glass rained across the dining room.

"Down!" Cassian shouted.

Before Saraphina could react, he threw himself across the table and pulled her beneath it.

Gunfire echoed outside.

His men answered immediately.

The estate became a battlefield.

Minutes later...

Silence.

Cassian walked outside.

Four attackers.

All dead.

One carried Gideon Rourke's insignia.

When Cassian returned, Saraphina was sitting on the floor, shaking.

Not because of the gunfire.

Because the smell of burning wood filled the room.

Fire.

Her worst nightmare.

Cassian slowly knelt beside her.

"You smell smoke," he said.

She nodded.

"It reminds you of him."

Tears gathered in her eyes.

For five years...

She finally whispered.

"He burned me because I refused to marry him."
