Chapter 3: The Cost of a Laugh

Security finally moved—but too late.
Not because Matteo called them.
Because someone from the back table quietly stood up and made a phone call that no one else noticed.
Within minutes, the energy in the ballroom shifted.
Whispers spread.
Ethan suddenly looked around, realizing the room was no longer on his side.
“What the hell is going on?” he snapped.
One of his friends stepped back. “Dude… I think you should stop talking.”
Matteo guided Anna behind him.
Still calm.
Still composed.
Ethan forced a laugh again, weaker now.
“She’s just a waitress. This is insane. You’re all acting like—”
Matteo interrupted him.
“She is my wife.”
Silence.
The kind that collapses space.
Ethan froze.
Even his breath seemed to hesitate.
That was when he finally noticed what he had done wasn’t just cruel—it was irreversible.
Not socially.
Not morally.
Legally.
The doors at the entrance opened again.
This time, not quietly.
Security staff entered with purpose.
Followed by hotel management.
And someone in a suit who didn’t belong to the event at all.
Ethan stepped backward.
“No—wait—this is a misunderstanding—”
But no one was listening anymore.
Anna gripped Matteo’s sleeve behind him, still shaking.
“Don’t let them take it away,” she whispered brokenly. “The video… everyone saw—”
Matteo nodded once.
“I know.”
Ethan was escorted away as the crowd finally stopped pretending this was entertainment.
No applause.
No laughter.
Only silence again.
But this time, it was different.
May you like
It wasn’t waiting to see what would happen next.
It was waiting for justice.
