Chapter 2: The Man Who Didn’t Raise His Voice

Matteo didn’t speak at first.

He kept walking.

Slow steps across marble, each one quieter than the last—but somehow heavier than anything in the room.

Ethan laughed nervously, still holding the scissors.

“Hey man, this is a private event—”

Matteo stopped in front of him.

Close enough that Ethan’s smile faltered.

For the first time, Ethan looked unsure.

Matteo’s eyes didn’t flicker to the crowd. Didn’t search for approval. Didn’t react to the phones recording him.

He looked only at Ethan.

Then he looked at Anna.

Still on her knees.

Still trembling.

Still trying to disappear into herself.

Something in Matteo’s expression changed—but it wasn’t rage.

It was recognition.

Like a decision had already been made long before he walked in.

“Let her go,” Matteo said quietly.

Ethan scoffed, trying to recover.

“Or what? You’re her husband or something?”

A few nervous laughs came from the tables again.

Matteo finally turned his head slightly toward the audience.

Just that.

The laughter died instantly.

Not because he threatened them.

Because they suddenly realized he didn’t need to.

Ethan’s grip on Anna loosened unconsciously.

Matteo stepped closer and gently removed Ethan’s hand from her wrist.

Not violently.

Not quickly.

Just inevitability.

Ethan blinked.

“Don’t touch me,” he muttered, but his voice had already lost its confidence.

Matteo didn’t answer.

He helped Anna stand.

She swayed, barely able to balance.

And for the first time since it began, someone covered her—not with shame, but with presence.

Then Matteo spoke again.

“This is where your night ends.”
