CHAPTER 3 — THE HOUSE OF LIES

The search warrant was executed before sunrise.
Thomas stood outside the Mercer estate while investigators carried out box after box.
Helen Mercer watched from the porch.
She looked twenty years older than she had the day before.
"I didn't know," she whispered.
Thomas looked at her.
"I believe you."
She started crying.
"I thought they argued. I thought Claire was depressed."
Inside the master bedroom detectives discovered hidden cameras.
Not one.
Seven.
Every room.
Every hallway.
Even the garage.
Detective Brooks frowned.
"This wasn't anger."
She looked toward the staircase.
"This was control."
Then another officer called out.
"You need to see this."
Inside a locked office they found journals.
Every page contained dates.
Arguments.
Punishments.
Rules.
One sentence appeared again and again.
She'll never leave.
Thomas felt physically sick.
Then forensic investigators opened a hidden safe.
Inside sat Claire's passport.
Driver's license.
Credit cards.
Bank statements.
She hadn't controlled a single dollar in nearly two years.
Detective Brooks quietly said,
"This isn't domestic conflict."
May you like
She closed the journal.
"It's captivity."
