CHAPTER 2 — THE TRUTH BENEATH THE BRUISES

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee.

Colonel Thomas Hale remained standing beside Claire's bed long after the nurses insisted she needed rest.

He had faced artillery fire.

He had written letters to grieving families.

None of it prepared him for seeing his daughter flinch when a nurse reached toward her shoulder.

The young nurse froze.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Claire forced a smile.

"It's okay."

But it wasn't.

A trauma physician entered carrying a clipboard thicker than Thomas liked.

"Colonel Hale?"

Thomas nodded.

"We've completed the preliminary examination."

The doctor's voice was calm, practiced.

"Your daughter has multiple bruises in different stages of healing. Two cracked ribs. A partially healed fracture in her wrist that was never treated. Severe dehydration. Malnutrition."

Thomas stared.

The doctor continued carefully.

"These injuries weren't caused by one fall."

Silence settled over the room.

Claire looked away.

Thomas felt something inside him crack.

"When?" he finally asked.

The doctor hesitated.

"Based on healing patterns...weeks. Possibly months."

Thomas looked at his daughter.

"You've been hurt for months."

Claire's eyes filled.

She whispered only one word.

"Yes."

...

Later that evening, Detective Maya Brooks arrived.

She didn't ask Claire what happened.

She simply sat beside the bed.

"When you're ready," she said softly, "I'll listen."

For nearly twenty minutes Claire remained silent.

Then she asked one question.

"If I tell you..."

she swallowed,

"...will he ever touch anyone again?"

The detective answered honestly.

"Only if we can't prove it."

May you like

Claire closed her eyes.

Then she began talking.
