Chapter 6 - THE DRIVE FROM THE CRASH

Victor requested immunity.
He claimed Margaret ordered everything.
He claimed Mercer designed the medical strategy.
He described himself as a lawyer protecting a powerful client.
Detective Collins placed the car’s data drive on the table between them.
“Why were you carrying this?”
Victor looked toward his attorney.
No answer came.
The drive contained the vehicle’s internal diagnostics.
The brake line pressure began falling twelve minutes after Ava left the estate.
The physical line had been cut partially.
It was designed to fail gradually.
A remote system disabled the electronic emergency brake.
The command came from a tablet registered to Victor’s law office.
His black signet ring had struck the vehicle frame, leaving a distinctive mark.
The evidence connected him directly.
Victor’s confidence broke.
He began talking.
Margaret had discovered that Ava planned to move the Sinclair shares into an employee-protected trust.
If the amendment was signed, Margaret would lose any path to control.
Victor was ordered to delay Ava.
Mercer drugged the tea.
Victor cut the brake line.
The synthetic voice was added to make Ava’s memory sound delusional if she survived.
The goal was to create a crash serious enough to incapacitate her.
Not necessarily kill her.
Ethan listened through the observation-room speaker.
He hated the distinction.
A plan that accepted death was still a plan to destroy a life.
Victor continued.
Ava survived with more cognitive clarity than expected.
Mercer began the medication program.
Margaret isolated her.
The trust amendment remained unsigned because Henry Sinclair had added a secret safeguard.
If Ava became incapacitated under suspicious circumstances, control transferred to an independent protector.
Margaret could not access the money through ordinary guardianship.
She needed Ava’s voluntary signature.
That was why she spent months rewriting Ava’s reality.
The office confrontation had been the final attempt.
Victor revealed another truth.
Ethan’s father, Richard Whitmore, had discovered Margaret’s financial manipulation twelve years earlier.
He planned to remove her from the family board.
Dr. Mercer altered Richard’s heart medication.
Victor prepared a new will.
Margaret allowed everyone to believe Richard died naturally.
The same three people had used the same structure before.
Drug.
Medical explanation.
Legal transfer.
Ethan’s face went cold.
“My father?”
Victor looked toward the observation glass.
“He found the payments.”
“He threatened to expose us.”
“What did my mother gain?”
“Voting control of Whitmore Holdings.”
“And you?”
“General counsel.”
“Mercer?”
“A research contract.”
Collins asked whether evidence remained.
Victor nodded.
Richard had kept a private archive.
He stored it in a safe-deposit box under a false company name.
Victor never found the key.
Margaret believed Ethan unknowingly possessed it.
That was why she never completely pushed him away.
His father’s watch contained a hidden compartment.
Ethan looked at his wrist.
He wore Richard’s watch every day.
The back opened with a tiny pressure release.
May you like
Inside was a brass key.
For twelve years, the evidence had rested against Ethan’s skin.
