Chapter 17 - THE LETTER MARGARET SENT

Two years after the trial, Margaret sent Ethan a letter from prison.

He left it unopened for three days.

Then he brought it to Ava.

“You do not need my permission to read it.”

“I know.”

“Why show me?”

“Secrets built my family.”

“I do not want another one.”

Ava asked whether he wanted her present.

“Yes.”

Ethan opened the envelope.

Margaret complained about prison food.

She blamed Victor.

Mercer.

Rebecca.

The board.

Then she wrote about Richard.

I did not intend for your father to die.

Samuel said the dose would weaken him.

Richard’s heart was more fragile than we knew.

Ethan stopped reading.

Ava waited.

He continued.

Everything I did was intended to preserve what our family created.

Ava would have handed control to employees and outsiders.

You chose her over your blood.

One day, you will understand that love always requires someone to lose.

Ethan folded the letter.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then anger arrived.

Grief.

Shame.

Relief.

Margaret understood the facts.

She still did not understand the harm.

“She believes love is a contest,” he said.

Ava nodded.

“She believed I won.”

“You survived.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Ethan placed the letter inside Richard’s evidence box.

Not as forgiveness.

As a record.

Weeks later, Margaret requested a visit.

Ethan declined.

She requested again.

He declined again.

Then a letter arrived addressed to Ava.

Ethan gave it to her unopened.

Lena stood nearby.

“Will you read it?” Lena asked.

“No.”

Ava placed it inside the legal archive.

Margaret had spoken enough inside her life.

Ava did not owe her another audience.

That decision felt simple.

Its simplicity was part of freedom.

Margaret could write.

Accuse.

Rewrite history inside a cell.

But she could no longer force Ava to drink.

She could no longer change the medication.

She could no longer lock the office.

She could no longer demand a signature.

Her voice had lost access.

That was the consequence she feared most.
