Chapter Four – The Witness They Never Expected

The search warrant reached the Bennett family estate just after sunset.

For forty years, Richard Bennett had walked into courtrooms as the man asking the questions.

Tonight, he stood in his own foyer while detectives carried out boxes labeled Financial Records, Electronic Devices, and Business Contracts.

His confidence didn't disappear.

It cracked.

Richard watched silently as Detective Marcus Hale sealed another evidence box.

"This is unnecessary," Richard said with practiced calm. "I've cooperated fully."

Detective Hale didn't even look up.

"Then you have nothing to worry about."

Richard forced a smile.

"I don't."

But the slight tremble in his hand told a different story.

Across town, Preston paced inside his penthouse apartment.

His phone hadn't stopped ringing all day.

Friends.

Business partners.

Journalists.

He ignored every call.

Only one message caught his attention.

Madison:
"I've moved out. Don't contact me again."

He stared at the screen before throwing the phone across the room.

It slammed into the wall and shattered.

For the first time in his life...

No one was coming to rescue him.

At the hospital, Sophie was sitting up in bed coloring quietly.

She smiled when I walked back into the room carrying a strawberry milkshake.

"For me?"

"For the bravest girl I know."

She giggled softly.

The sound filled the room with something I hadn't heard since before the wedding.

Hope.

As she colored, Detective Hale knocked gently.

"I'm sorry to interrupt."

He looked at Sophie.

"I have something for your mom."

Once we stepped into the hallway, he handed me a sealed envelope.

"The forensic lab finished examining the menu board."

I opened the report.

My stomach tightened.

"What is it?"

"The blood belongs to Sophie."

"I know that."

"There are also fingerprints."

I looked up.

"Only Preston's?"

Detective Hale nodded.

"No fingerprints from you."

"No fingerprints from Sophie."

"He swung it with both hands."

The evidence now matched every witness who had seen the attack.

Just then, another detective hurried down the hallway.

"Hale."

"We found someone."

"Who?"

"The wedding photographer's assistant."

Detective Hale frowned.

"I thought she'd already been interviewed."

"She left before police arrived."

"Why?"

"She says she was afraid of the Bennett family."

An hour later, twenty-four-year-old Emily Carter sat nervously inside the police interview room.

Her hands shook around a paper coffee cup.

"I didn't want any trouble."

Detective Hale spoke gently.

"We only need the truth."

Emily took a deep breath.

"I was replacing camera batteries before dinner."

"I was behind the decorative curtain near the head table."

"No one saw me."

She swallowed hard.

"I watched Preston take his phone..."

"...and put it inside the little girl's jacket."

The room became completely silent.

"You saw him?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"Because his father saw me."

Detective Hale leaned forward.

"What happened?"

"Mr. Richard Bennett walked over afterward."

"He asked if I'd seen anything unusual."

"What did you tell him?"

"I said... I wasn't sure."

She lowered her head.

"He handed me his business card."

"He said..."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"'Some memories become expensive mistakes.'"

"And inside the card..."

"...there was five thousand dollars in cash."

Detective Hale's jaw tightened.

"Did you keep the money?"

Emily nodded.

"I was scared."

"But I never spent it."

She reached into her purse.

The envelope was still sealed.

"I brought it back."

The serial numbers were recorded immediately.

Every bill would be traced.

If Richard Bennett claimed he never offered money...

The cash would tell a different story.

Meanwhile, news helicopters circled above the Bennett family law firm.

A television reporter stood outside the building.

"Sources now confirm police are investigating possible evidence tampering, witness intimidation, and financial fraud connected to prominent attorney Richard Bennett and his son Preston Bennett."

Inside the office, associates watched the broadcast in stunned silence.

One by one...

Partners quietly removed Richard's name from active case files.

Not because he had been charged.

Because they believed he soon would be.

That evening, Madison requested another meeting with Detective Hale.

She placed a leather journal on the table.

"I found this hidden inside Preston's home office."

"What's inside?"

"My husband's personal notes."

The detective opened the first page.

Most entries were ordinary.

Wedding expenses.

Business meetings.

Travel plans.

Then he reached a page dated three weeks before the wedding.

His eyes widened.

Written neatly in Preston's own handwriting were six chilling words.

"Make Evelyn leave before the ceremony."

Below it...

Another line.

"Use Sophie if necessary."

Detective Hale slowly closed the journal.

For several long seconds...

No one spoke.

Because everyone in the room understood exactly what those words meant.

The attack at the wedding...

May you like

Had never been an accident.

It had been part of a plan from the very beginning.
