Chapter Two – The Footage No One Could Explain

The emergency room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and fresh coffee.
Sophie lay quietly on the hospital bed, a thick white bandage wrapped around the left side of her head. A pediatric nurse had finally convinced her to close her eyes after promising that her favorite stuffed rabbit would stay beside her all night.
The CT scan ruled out a skull fracture.
No brain bleed.
But the doctor looked me straight in the eyes before leaving.
"She suffered a concussion."
"Keep her under observation for the next twenty-four hours."
"And emotionally..."
He paused.
"...she's going to remember tonight for a very long time."
Those words hurt more than anything Preston had done.
An hour later, Detective Marcus Hale stepped into Sophie's room carrying a slim laptop.
"Mrs. Bennett," he said quietly, "the hotel released the first surveillance footage."
My heart pounded.
"Can I see it?"
He nodded.
"The recording has no audio, but it covers the bridal table."
He placed the laptop on the rolling tray.
The video began.
Time stamp: 6:42 p.m.
Guests mingled around the ballroom while photographers moved between tables.
Preston laughed with several friends.
Madison posed for pictures.
Nothing unusual.
Then Sophie appeared.
She skipped across the dance floor holding a tiny cupcake.
She waved to the bride from several feet away.
Madison smiled politely before another photographer called her back.
Sophie never went closer.
Never touched the bridal table.
Never reached for Preston's phone.
The detective paused the video.
"Notice the time."
Six forty-four.
Preston's phone was still lying on the table beside his champagne glass.
Exactly where he claimed it had disappeared.
The next clip showed six forty-seven.
Preston walked back toward the table.
He glanced around.
Then...
He quietly slipped his own phone into the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket.
I frowned.
"Why would he do that?"
Detective Hale leaned back.
"That's what we're trying to determine."
The footage continued.
Thirty seconds later...
Preston reached into the same pocket.
Pulled the phone back out.
Looked around once more.
Then walked out of camera view.
Three minutes later...
He returned shouting.
"My phone's gone!"
The detective stopped the video again.
"According to this recording..."
"...the phone never disappeared."
A knock interrupted us.
Another detective entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
"We received the videographer's memory cards."
My pulse quickened.
"The wedding camera?"
He nodded.
"The photographer keeps filming before and after formal shots."
"We found something interesting."
He inserted another memory card.
The image was shakier than the security camera.
But much closer.
It showed Preston standing near the family tables before making his announcement.
Sophie sat beside me eating cake.
Her little denim jacket hung over the back of her chair.
Preston walked past us smiling.
He pretended to greet one of my cousins.
Then...
Without looking...
His right hand disappeared behind Sophie's chair.
Less than two seconds.
He kept walking.
No one noticed.
Except the camera.
The videographer had been filming the flower arrangements behind him.
The movement appeared in the corner of the frame.
Detective Hale slowed the footage.
Frame by frame.
Preston's hand entered the jacket pocket.
Something metallic disappeared inside.
Then he walked away.
No hesitation.
No surprise.
No uncertainty.
Like a man completing a task he had planned hours earlier.
I covered my mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Detective Hale looked at me.
"Mrs. Bennett..."
"We believe your brother planted the phone."
The room became perfectly still.
Years of family dinners.
Birthdays.
Christmas mornings.
Every excuse my parents had ever made for Preston...
collapsed inside me all at once.
Another officer stepped inside.
"We've interviewed several hotel employees."
"What did they say?"
"One waitress overheard Preston telling his best man..."
He opened his notebook.
"'Watch how easy this is.'"
The detective closed the notebook.
"At the time she thought it was about a wedding prank."
"It wasn't."
Just then, my phone buzzed.
Caller ID:
Mom.
I answered.
Her voice was icy.
"What have you told the police?"
"The truth."
"You need to stop this."
"Preston's career will be destroyed."
I stared at my sleeping daughter.
"He almost killed your granddaughter."
Carolyn didn't respond.
Instead she said quietly,
"Family protects family."
I finally understood.
"No, Mom."
"You protect Preston."
"You stopped being my family years ago."
Before she could answer...
I ended the call.
And for the first time in my life...
...I felt absolutely no guilt.
Across town...
Inside a private conference room at the Whitmore Hotel...
Preston watched the detectives carry away the surveillance servers.
His attorney whispered,
"They have more footage than we expected."
Preston's face turned pale.
"How much more?"
The lawyer didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He slowly slid a tablet across the table.
The paused image showed only one frame.
One single frozen frame.
Preston's hand...
Inside Sophie's jacket pocket.
His lawyer looked at him silently.
Then asked the one question Preston couldn't answer.
"Would you like to tell me why your fingerprints are inside your niece's coat?"
May you like
For the first time that night...
The groom had no lie left to tell.
