CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET THEY PROTECTED

Officer Morris allowed the footage to continue.
Neither woman realized the hallway camera recorded sound.
Rachel heard her mother's voice clearly.
"Did anyone see you?"
"No."
"You made sure Rachel's boy would be blamed?"
"Of course."
Their mother nodded.
"Good."
Then she spoke the sentence that destroyed the family forever.
"If Rachel ever tells anyone the truth about your real father, we'll lose everything."
The ballroom erupted.
Rachel stopped breathing.
Her father looked frozen.
Vanessa whispered,
"Mom..."
But it was too late.
Their mother had confessed.
Thirty-five years earlier, she had secretly had an affair with her late husband's business partner.
Vanessa wasn't their father's biological daughter.
Only Rachel knew.
Only Rachel had kept the secret to protect the family.
For years, their mother feared Rachel would eventually reveal it.
So she spent decades turning everyone against her.
Tonight's fake theft wasn't about a bracelet.
It was about destroying Rachel's credibility forever.
The entire plan had been captured on camera.
Every word.
Every lie.
Every motive.

He looked at his wife with tears he could no longer hide.
"You stole thirty-five years of my life."
May you like
She couldn't answer.
