CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

The footage played across the ballroom's giant projector.
Every guest watched in complete silence.
First...
Ethan stood near the dessert table talking to another child.
Then the video showed Vanessa walking behind him.
She looked around.
Made sure nobody was watching.
Reached into her own designer handbag.
Removed the diamond bracelet.
Then calmly slipped it into Ethan's open backpack.
Gasps filled the room.
Rachel heard someone whisper,
"Oh my God..."
But the video wasn't finished.
A few moments later Vanessa deliberately walked away, pretended to panic, and loudly announced that her bracelet was missing.
Then she led everyone directly to Ethan.
Exactly as if she already knew where it would be.
Because she did.
Officer Morris paused the video.
"You planted the evidence."
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
"No... that's not what it looks like."
"It looks exactly like that," the officer replied.
Her fiancé stared at the frozen frame.
His face slowly hardened.
"You framed a nine-year-old?"
Vanessa reached for his arm.
"I can explain."
He stepped away.
"No."
The room that had spent years protecting Vanessa finally began seeing her for who she really was.
But Rachel noticed something strange.
The video continued recording.
After planting the bracelet...
Vanessa walked into a private hallway.

And met someone waiting in the shadows.
Her own mother.
