Chapter 4: The Fall of the Golden Son

My father walked toward the screen slowly.
Like an old man approaching a grave.
He watched the footage twice.
Then a third time.
“No,” he said quietly. “This is not possible.”
Preston finally spoke, voice cracking at the edges.
“She took my phone—”
“Stop,” I said.
My voice wasn’t loud.
But it cut through everything.
I stood up slowly, still holding Sophie.
Blood had soaked into my dress now, but I didn’t feel it anymore.
“You planted it,” I said.
Preston flinched.
For the first time in his life, he had no audience willing to save him.
My mother’s voice rose sharply.
“Evelyn, don’t turn this into something worse than it is—”
I turned my head toward her.
And she stopped mid-sentence.
Because she saw something in my face she had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Clarity.
“You let him hurt my daughter,” I said.
Silence swallowed the ballroom.
Even the chandeliers seemed too bright now.
Then Sophie moved slightly in my arms.
And whispered weakly:
May you like
“Mommy… why didn’t they stop him?”
That was when something inside me ended completely.
