Chapter 3: Playback

The screen appeared on the ballroom projector.
At first, just grainy footage of the reception.
Laughter.
Music.
Champagne.
Then—Preston standing near the head table.
His movements replayed in cold clarity.
The missing phone.
The accusation.
Sophie sitting quietly, legs swinging.
Then Preston’s hand.
Reaching into her jacket.
The phone being pulled out.
A pause.
Then—
A second angle auto-switched from the security system.
And everything changed.
The footage showed Preston earlier.
Placing something inside Sophie’s jacket.
Carefully.
Deliberately.
The room shifted instantly.
Whispers exploded across the ballroom.
“That’s edited—” my mother snapped.
But the technician shook his head.
“It’s multi-angle synchronized feed. It cannot be altered in playback.”
Preston’s face went pale.
For the first time, he didn’t speak.
On screen, the final moment replayed:
Sophie crying.
Me stepping in.
Preston grabbing the menu board.
The swing.
The impact.
Sophie collapsing.
A collective inhale swept through the guests.

Someone dropped a glass again—but this time no one reacted.
Because the lie had just died in front of everyone.
