Chapter 7 – The Family's Lies

Three days later, the county courthouse was surrounded by news vans.

The case had exploded across local media.

PREGNANT WOMAN RESCUED AFTER EMERGENCY SOS

HUSBAND AND FAMILY CHARGED IN BRUTAL ASSAULT

Reporters crowded behind barricades as sheriff's deputies escorted Trent, Helen, Richard, and Nicole into the building.

For the first time, they looked less like a powerful family and more like four frightened defendants.

Inside Courtroom 3B, Judge Eleanor Watkins adjusted her glasses as the hearing began.

"Case number 26-4187," the clerk announced. "The State versus Trent Carter, Helen Carter, Richard Carter, and Nicole Carter."

The defendants stood.

Each entered the same plea.

"Not guilty."

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Monroe remained calm.

"The State is prepared to present evidence regarding pretrial detention."

Judge Watkins nodded.

"Proceed."

Rachel walked to the center of the courtroom.

"Your Honor, this was not a spontaneous act of domestic violence."

She clicked a remote.

A monitor behind her lit up.

Security footage from the kitchen appeared.

Muted.

No sound.

Only images.

Lena collapsing.

Trent raising the wooden club.

Helen smiling.

Nicole holding her phone.

Even without audio, the courtroom grew quiet.

Rachel spoke steadily.

"The defendants will claim this was an accident."

She paused.

"The evidence says otherwise."

Defense attorney Martin Hayes rose immediately.

"Objection."

"These clips lack context."

Rachel nodded.

"They certainly do."

She pressed another button.

The audio began to play.

"Hit her again."

Helen's own voice echoed through the courtroom.

Several spectators gasped.

Rachel let the recording continue.

"Please... the baby..."

Lena's trembling voice.

Then...

"No one is coming to save you."

Trent's words.

Rachel stopped the video.

"No further context is necessary."

Helen leaned toward her attorney.

"This is edited," she whispered.

Martin frowned.

"It isn't."

She stared at him.

"What?"

"The forensic lab verified the file."

Helen's confidence faltered.

The judge turned toward the defense.

"Would you like to respond?"

Martin stood slowly.

"Your Honor..."

"My clients acknowledge that family arguments occurred."

Rachel almost smiled.

"Arguments?"

Martin continued.

"But Mrs. Carter was emotionally unstable during her pregnancy."

Lena, watching through a secure video link from the hospital conference room, stiffened.

Alex squeezed her shoulder.

Rachel was already on her feet.

"The defense intends to blame the victim."

Judge Watkins looked directly at Martin.

"You'd better have evidence."

Martin hesitated.

"We..."

He had none.

The prosecution called its first witness.

Deputy Sarah Collins.

She described arriving at the house.

"I observed the victim lying on the kitchen floor."

"What condition was she in?"

"Bleeding heavily."

"What did you observe in the defendant's hands?"

"A wooden club."

Rachel nodded.

"No further questions."

Martin approached for cross-examination.

"Deputy Collins..."

"You never actually witnessed my client strike the victim, correct?"

Sarah answered without hesitation.

"Correct."

Martin smiled slightly.

"So it's possible—"

She interrupted.

"I did witness him gripping the weapon while standing over a pregnant woman covered in blood."

His smile disappeared.

"No further questions."

Next came Detective Laura Kim.

Rachel asked one simple question.

"Detective..."

"How many recordings were recovered from the residence?"

Laura answered clearly.

"Three hundred and twelve."

Murmurs spread through the courtroom.

Rachel continued.

"How many documented abuse toward the victim?"

"One hundred eighty-seven."

The courtroom fell silent.

Martin stood.

"Objection."

Rachel looked at him.

"On what grounds?"

He hesitated.

"...Prejudicial."

Judge Watkins shook her head.

"Overruled."

Then Rachel revealed something no one expected.

"We also recovered deleted text messages."

She displayed one on the courtroom screen.

Helen: Break her spirit before the baby arrives.

Another.

Richard: Alex is the only problem. Keep them apart.

Another.

Trent: She'll never leave me.

The final message appeared.

Nicole: I'm recording everything. It's hilarious.

Nicole covered her mouth.

She hadn't known the deleted messages could be recovered.

During recess, Nicole sat alone in a holding room.

She stared at the wall.

The confidence she'd worn for years had vanished.

A knock came at the door.

Her attorney entered.

"We need to talk."

Nicole looked up.

"What now?"

The attorney closed the file in his hands.

"The prosecution is offering something."

"What?"

"A cooperation agreement."

Nicole frowned.

"They want you to testify."

"Against my family."

Silence.

"If you refuse..."

He slid another document across the table.

"You could spend decades in prison."

Nicole's hands began to shake.

Meanwhile, Lena visited Hope in the NICU.

The tiny infant had gained another three ounces.

It wasn't much.

But to the doctors...

It was encouraging.

Nurse Emily smiled.

"She's getting stronger every day."

Lena reached through the incubator.

Hope wrapped her tiny fingers around her mother's fingertip.

Alex watched quietly.

"She has your determination."

Lena smiled.

"I hope she never has to use it the way I did."

That evening, Detective Laura arrived with unexpected news.

"We've finished interviewing Nicole."

Lena looked up.

"Did she say anything?"

Laura nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Alex leaned forward.

"What did she tell you?"

Laura took a deep breath.

"She admitted the abuse had been going on for years."

Lena closed her eyes.

"But..."

Laura continued.

"She also said something we weren't expecting."

"What?"

Laura's expression turned grave.

"According to Nicole..."

"...the attack in the kitchen wasn't originally supposed to happen that morning."

Silence.

Lena felt a chill run down her spine.

"What do you mean?"

Laura met her eyes.

"She claims the family had been planning something much worse."

The room fell completely silent.

And for the first time since escaping the house...

Lena realized the nightmare she survived might not have been the worst thing they had planned.
