Chapter 15 – The Threat

The pediatric wing was locked down within minutes.

Hospital security officers sealed every entrance.

Visitors were asked to remain where they were while detectives swept the building.

Hope slept peacefully through the commotion, unaware that another storm had just entered her mother's life.

Lena, however, couldn't stop staring at the evidence bag containing the anonymous letter.

"If you testify..."

The words echoed in her mind.

Alex rested a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"They're trying to scare you."

She looked up at him.

"It's working."

He didn't lie.

"I know."

Then he added quietly,

"But fear doesn't mean they win."

Detective Laura Kim met with hospital security in a conference room.

"We've reviewed every entrance camera from the last two hours," the chief of security said.

Laura folded her arms.

"Anything?"

The technician enlarged one frame.

A man wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses entered the lobby carrying a large manila envelope.

He never approached Lena.

Instead, he handed the envelope to a volunteer at the information desk.

"Someone asked me to deliver this," he'd reportedly said before walking away.

No name.

No conversation.

No hesitation.

Within thirty seconds, he disappeared into the parking garage.

Laura frowned.

"Can we identify him?"

The technician zoomed in.

The man's face remained hidden beneath the cap.

But something else caught Laura's attention.

His right forearm.

A faded tattoo.

An eagle gripping an anchor.

She recognized it immediately.

"Freeze that image."

Back at the sheriff's office, Detective Mark Rivera stared at the enlarged tattoo.

"I've seen that before."

Laura turned.

"Where?"

Mark walked to an evidence cabinet and retrieved an old case file.

"This symbol belonged to a private security company."

He opened the folder.

Sentinel Protective Services.

"They provided executive protection until they shut down five years ago."

Laura nodded slowly.

"Run every former employee."

Meanwhile, Lena was moved to a confidential room on another floor.

Only a handful of hospital staff knew her new location.

Deputies were stationed outside the door twenty-four hours a day.

Hope remained in the NICU under additional security.

Nurse Emily tried to reassure Lena.

"No one gets into the NICU without multiple security checks."

Lena managed a weak smile.

"I know."

But fear lingered.

She had escaped the house.

Now someone wanted to silence her.

That evening, Margaret Holloway came to visit.

She carried a small knitted teddy bear.

"I heard what happened."

Lena accepted the gift.

"Thank you."

Margaret sat beside the bed.

"I blamed myself."

Lena looked confused.

"For what?"

"I gave Trent money."

Her voice trembled.

"I thought I was helping you."

Lena reached over and gently took the elderly woman's hand.

"You didn't know."

"No."

Margaret wiped away a tear.

"But I should have."

Lena shook her head.

"The only people responsible are the ones who hurt me."

Margaret squeezed her hand.

"Your mother would be proud of the woman you've become."

Across town, the investigation finally produced a lead.

Detective Mark Rivera walked quickly into Laura's office.

"We identified the tattoo."

Laura looked up.

"Who is he?"

Mark placed a personnel file on the desk.

Name: Owen Briggs.

Former employee of Sentinel Protective Services.

Age: Forty-six.

Military veteran.

Several misdemeanor convictions.

No felonies.

Laura scanned the page.

"Any connection to Trent?"

Mark nodded.

"He worked private security for one of Trent's business clients three years ago."

Laura's expression sharpened.

"Find him."

By midnight, deputies located Owen Briggs at a small auto repair shop outside town.

He didn't run.

He didn't argue.

He simply looked at Detective Laura and said,

"I figured you'd find me."

Laura studied him carefully.

"Did you deliver this letter?"

She held up the evidence bag.

Owen looked at it.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

Alex, who had insisted on being present, stepped forward.

"You threatened my sister."

Owen looked him straight in the eye.

"No."

"I delivered a threat."

"There's a difference."

Alex wasn't impressed.

"Not to me."

Laura raised a hand, signaling everyone to remain calm.

"Who gave it to you?"

Owen hesitated.

"I want immunity."

Laura shook her head.

"I can't promise that."

He sighed.

"Then I want protection."

"From who?"

His eyes darted toward the window.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with."

The room fell silent.

Laura leaned forward.

"Tell me."

Owen swallowed.

"It wasn't Trent."

"It wasn't Helen."

"It wasn't anyone in that family."

Laura felt a chill run down her spine.

"Then who?"

Owen looked down at the table before answering.

"I don't know his real name."

"What do you know?"

"He called himself..."

Owen's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"...Mr. Black."

The room fell completely silent.

Laura wrote the name down.

"Describe him."

Owen shook his head.

"I only met him once."

"He wore gloves."

"A baseball cap."

"Never took off his sunglasses."

"He paid me five thousand dollars in cash to deliver the envelope."

"Did he say why?"

Owen nodded.

"Only one thing."

Laura waited.

Owen repeated the exact words.

"Make sure the mother remembers she's not safe."

Hours later, after Owen agreed to cooperate, Laura stood alone in the evidence room.

She looked at the anonymous letter once more.

Then at the growing wall of evidence.

This case had begun as a brutal act of domestic violence.

It had grown into a conspiracy.

Now...

Someone outside the Carter family had entered the picture.

Someone with money.

Someone careful.

Someone who preferred to stay invisible.

Laura picked up her phone and called Rachel Monroe.

"We have a new suspect."

Rachel answered immediately.

"Who?"

Laura looked at the single name written across her notebook.

MR. BLACK

"I don't know who he is yet," she said.

May you like

"But I intend to find him before this case ever reaches a jury."
