Chapter 2: The Hospital Room

Claire woke beneath white lights.
Her legs were wrapped in clean bandages. Her throat felt raw. Daniel sat in the chair beside her bed, his hair messy, his face hollow with guilt.
For a moment, she thought he looked like the man she had married.
Then she remembered the kitchen.
“You watched,” she whispered.
Daniel leaned forward. “Claire, I froze. I swear, I didn’t understand what happened.”
“You understood enough to stay quiet.”
He flinched.
Outside the room, a police officer spoke softly with a nurse. Claire could hear pieces of the conversation. Second-degree burns. Statement. Charges. Protective order.
Daniel swallowed hard. “Meredith was arrested.”
Claire turned her face toward the window.
“She told them she panicked,” he continued. “Mom is saying it was an accident.”
Claire gave a tired, bitter smile. “Of course she is.”
Daniel reached for her hand, then stopped himself.
“I should have protected you,” he said.
Claire finally looked at him.
“No, Daniel. You should have believed me before the police had to.”
His eyes filled.
For years, she had explained the small cruelties. The comments. The exclusions. The way Meredith always made Claire feel like a guest in her own marriage. And every time, Daniel had asked her to be patient.
To understand.
To keep the peace.
Now peace had put her in a hospital bed on Christmas night.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I don’t want your family near me.”
Daniel nodded quickly. “Anything. Whatever you need.”
She opened her eyes again.
“And I don’t know if I want you near me either.”

That hurt him more than shouting would have.
But Claire was done protecting people from the consequences of what they had allowed.
